MCKINNON>MCARTHUR Name Change???.....

Post by scotincanada » Tue May 02, 2006 12:31 am

I just found an interesting clue in my long search for my missing MCKINNONs - they may have changed their name to MCARTHUR! My great great grandparents, Archibald MCKINNON & Catherine MCARTHUR (both b. abt. 1810) married abt. 1838 & had children - Catherine abt. 1839, Donald abt. 1843, Neil b. abt. 1847 & Ann b. abt. 1849. Archibald, Catherine & young Catherine are on 1841 census at Burg, Kilninian. By 1851, only young Donald remains at Burg living with MCARTHUR relatives. Then in 1861, Neil joins Donald there but their surname is given as MCARTHUR, which begs the question - was this an error or were they actually going by the surname MCARTHUR for a time? This would explain why I cannot find Archibald or Catherine on any document (census, death etc.) after 1841. Also the children were all "missing" too for years until they turn up in marriages in the 1860s-80s.

Maybe, on 1861 census, I should be seeking ...
Archibald MCARTHURhead age abt. 50
Catherine MCARTHUR wife age abt. 50
Catherine MCARTHUR daughter age abt. 22
Ann MCARTHUR daughter age abt. 12

Thanks for anything you can add!

Do our ancestors not think we have a heard enough job finding them, without them chaing their names without notice!

I hope you have some luck in finding them.
