2006 Canadian census .....

Post by Lahb » Tue May 02, 2006 11:55 pm

Didn't know if anyone is interested but we just got our 2006 Census form today and I thought I'd post what kind of information our rellies in 2098 will be able to access :)

a) Address
b) names of all who live at this address
d) is anyone listed a farm operator who produces at least one agricultural product intended for sale
(???!!! what a question :? )

Then you write down:

*name (family and given) of each person
*sex
*date of birth
(notes to enter best estimate if exact date isn't known)
*marital status - (options are - never legally married, legally married, separated, divorced, widowed)

*is this person living with a common-law partner (yes/no and includes those living with opposite sex or same sex partners)
*relationship to person 1
(the first person you've listed down on the list)
*what is the language that this person first learned at home in childhood and still understands
*mark yes or no - does this person agree to make his/her 2006 census information available for public release in 2098 (92 years after the census)

Some very basic and expected stuff but a few questions in there are new ones at least here!

Hi Lahb
mark yes or no - does this person agree to make his/her 2006 census information available for public release in 2098 (92 years after the census)
Interesting to see what is asked , but heck, that's a worrying option for the family researchers post 2098....
Q. "Why can't I find my gr grandmother in the 2006 census?"
A " 'Cos she marked "no"..."
:?

Best wishes
Lesley

2006 Canadian Census

I too was disappointed in the Canadian Census

I would have liked to see occupation and place of birth on the Canadian census - I was disappointed when I filled in the forms last night. Who care about my privacy in 2098 I will be 129 years old!!!!

I was disappointed to see the government has chosen to allow people to 'opt-out' of having census info disclosed in 92 years.

It definitely goes against all things genealogical, and there will be many who will refuse distribution of the info "just because they can".

What a loss to future generations, looking for families :? I guess it adds a new meaning to the phrase 'reaching out from her grave

Perhaps they decided to give us a break this time
[Later... or, perhaps they gave *me* a break this time. I recall filling 32 pages of census twice, recently...]

In the last couple of censuses (2001 and 1996) the documents ran to 32 pages (!) for the "long form" (given to one in five households). Have a look at these, for the long forms: 7 questions (same as for the short form: name, sex, age, marital and common-law status, family and household relationships and mother tongue) plus an additional 52 questions.

2001, long form: http://www.statcan.ca/english/sdds/inst ... 2_V2_E.pdf

1996 long form: http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census0 ... -2b-en.pdf

Following on this thread, there is an article on the changes to the Canadian census and how it will impact on genealogical research.
