WILLIAM REID.....

Post by jennovo » Fri May 05, 2006 2:23 am

Hi All,

I need some rethinking and hope lots of heads are better than one!

William George Reid is my g.grandfather and the story goes:-
As per marriage (married in Australia) and death certs. William was born in 1869-72 (varied between marriage and death) in Tranent, East Lothian. On his marriage cert. he gives his parents as David Reid and Catherine Hogg, and states that he was born in Tranent; this is also on his death cert.
I have purchased the marriage transcription of his parents and even of his Reid grandparents - all seems correct. My problem is; I cannot find a birth cert. for William to truly tie him to his family. I have tried SP census records but the ones I have viewed have not been correct and there are so many Reids.
My great aunt told me that William was born in Glasgow, at 9/10years emigrated with his parents to New Zealand, stayed a year, and then came on to Australia.
As of yet I can find no immigration records for the family or deaths for his parents in New South Wales.

I will also post this in 'scots abroad'.

All help most welcome.
Jennifer.

Hi Jennifer
I would tend to go with Williams marriage cert for his place of birth rather than the word of your great aunt..
This is backed up by the fact that his parents were married in Tranent on 1866.

Have you looked at the George Reid born in Tranent in 1871?
The "William" may have been added at a later date or it may be a sibling.

Thank you Jim: Can you tell me where you obtained that information?
Was it from the IGI and did parents match up as I can't seem to find the record? I thought William was an only child but I always wondered why.
Many thanks,
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer

George Moncrieff Reid b. May 8 1871 Tranent
f. - William Reid - m. - Mary Reid (from IGI)

Just a thought but the fact he appears an only child made me wonder if perhaps he was actually David and Catherine's nephew and the William was added later as Jim suggested. Checking the 1881 census for Tranent to see if George aged 9 yrs. is there with his parents George and Mary may help prove or disprove this.

Could George and David be siblings? as you have the names of David's parents might be worth checking for their other children.

Noted another family in Tranent with a William b. 1866 parents James Reid/Agnes Young.

Hi Jennifer - the William Reid of James Reid and Agnes Young is one of my lot. And he did marry in Queensland Australia in 1892, to Alice Weldon. There is a strong Reid/Hogg connection that goes on for donkeys years in Tranent area, and it's very confusing trying to sort them all out.

If you think there might be a connection, we can compare notes.

Best wishes

Hi everyone

This is a stickler! Not only is there no obvious birth registration of William George (altho I haven't looked at quite all of them  ) there is no David and Catherine to be found on the 1871 census!! Oh well not true....I did find one such couple in Lanark and I got all excited...but they had a daughter Sarah age 4 and this Catherine was from Ireland. Clearly not your people!!! Your Catherine is very easy to locate in 1861 with her family in Gladsmuir. Where she got to after 1866 so far is still a mystery. Perhaps they were simply skipped on the 1871 census.....or perhaps they are still there hiding...

Sorry...

Best wishes
Jean

Hi all,
Thank you so very much. I am most grateful for the passing around of ideas, it helps me rethink the story. I really am at a loss though. Though I have the information which he provided I keep worrying that I have the wrong family.
William's father David Thomson (born 1845) had six siblings:
Thomas 1831 / George 1833 / James 1838 / John 1840 / Anne Gilchrist and Isabella Thomson 1848.
William was married in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. It would seem logical that if he travelled from New Zealand, he would have entered through Victoria or New South Wales - I have checked what records those states have on immigration.
Does any one know if Queensland has online records for immigration. I was chasing a McGraa relation in QLD and had to pay per hour for the information.
I was given a Reid line from Tranent from a lady in WA but none overlap with mine as of yet.
William's mother Catherine was a Hogg before her marriage and as of yet I can get no further back than her father John - I have done the IGI and SP. Too many Hoggs and Reids!!!
Can you tell me where was the most likely place of emigration would have been?
If you have any new ideas - I'm ready!
Thank you, thank you,
Jennifer.
