Glaswegians.....

Post by wini » Fri May 05, 2006 10:50 am

To all you good Glaswegians out there the city made it on to the ABC morning AM programme in Australia.

It was noted that it is the third most violent city in the Western World.
Much more dangerous than most American cities.

It stated that all the "old razor gangs" from the fifties are back with the same names fighting each other for their territory.

It was called recreational violence because there is nothing better to do on a Saturday night. I remember the gangs when I was growing up but I obviously didn't live close enough to be involved and even though you could almost depend on a fight in the Palais or the Locarno they did seem to keep themselves to themselves and everyone just danced around them.

Point is this kind of publicicty can't be good for the tourist Industry so GLASGOW strike back and show some positive side to the world

Hi Wini

Sounds like some reporter has just read 'No Mean City' and has not looked at the statistics. Most American cities have more serious assaults in a week than Glasgow has in a year!
I regularly collect my daughter from city centre gigs where she has been photographing groups for promo stuff and would not think twice about waiting around till she is finished.
I knew the tail end of the gang warfare stuff in the late fifties so feel able to make comparisons. No comparison!!!

Hi Wini

I have to agree with Russell - I've worked in Glasgow for the last 20 years. I was born in Elderslie and lived in Lochwinnoch (small village about 4 miles from where Russell is) for most of my younger days. In my time been around the city centre late at night after falling out of a pub or theatre and I can honestly say I've never felt in any danger even late on a Friday or Saturday night while waiting for a taxi or train. Glasgow is a brilliant place to be and there is lots to do. I've a friend here from New Zealand and she's enjoying living in the West End and travels around the city a lot on her own.

It is fair to say that some parts of the city are not quite as salubrious (big word and it's Friday!! must have a lie down now with a bottle of wine...) but on the whole I don't think it's any worse than any other major metropolitan city.

I like it anyway!

Liz

PS Russell - did you see that lightening last night? It was stunning. Thunderstorm went on for a good bit though.

Hi Liz

Spectacular stuff wasn't it?

I didn't fancy fried computer so I switched off, opened the curtains and enjoyed the fireworks.
Its years since we had anything so prolongued and loud. Beat Blackpool illuminations hands down.

Since your just along the road I'll join you in that glass of wine!!

I've just finished doing a post on Lilias Day for someone else who has fond memories of the parade and park.

No the reporter didn't say who were No. 1 and 2
It is good to hear nothing has changed as far as safety is concerned.
Shame about the weather.

And don't tell me one good lightning show makes up for grey drizzly days. I remember freezing to death at Bus stops.
I was 23 when I left Glasgow so truthfully I can't see me ever settling back there.

It is good to know that some of you people have greater fortitude than I have.

Hi Wini

Its the grey, drizzly days when the wind sweeps across Rannoch Moor that makes Scotland a great place to be. It has even more atmosphere than Culloden.

And its the warmth of the Glaswegian that makes Glasgow a great place to live and work. None of your sweltering summers and -40 Celsius winters for me thank you or your venomous monsters that don't like strangers.
Maybe I have some Eskimo blood in me but I haven't researched that line yet!!

Hi Wini,

I have to agree with Liz and Russell. It's also a number of years since I lived in Scotland but never, not even at 2 in the morning, waiting for the last bus to Johnstone at Anderston bus station, did I feel scared.

I have to admit, that being in Argyle Street on the afternoon of an 'Old Firm' game could be a bit hairy. Especially if you forgot it was on, and you're Granny lived just past Parkhead. The No. 64 to Auchenshuggle was not a pleasant trip on these days.

I asked who was 1st and 2nd, because I live just outside New York. I'm afraid I have a hard time trying to imagine Glasgow being anywhere near as bad as here. There are kids afraid to play in the playground for fear of being hit by stray bullets. I no longer read newspapers. I just couldn't take anymore of the violence or cruelty that seemed to be occuring on a daily basis.

Every city has it's 'dodgy area's', but 3rd. I wish I knew what it was being compared to.

Christine

I think you folks still in Scotland should email the ABC

the article can be found on their website www.abc.net.au/am

Archives for the 5th May

I think it is worthwhile as AM is an Australia wide programme and is taken seriously, a bit like the BBC, if they said it, it must be true

Give them heaps
