I would be grateful for some ideas on this brickwall. Robert Knox is my 3xggrandfather. He married Jean/Jane McIndoe in 1783 in Renfrew. The couple had 9 children, all born in Renfrew.
I have been unable to find Robert's birth/christening on Scotlandspeople and am wondering where I can go from here. My father was always told that the Knoxes came originally from Dumfries(shire), but I can find no connection there. Jean McIndoe was born in Glasgow in 1765 and I have her parents.
As I live in the farthest corner of East Kent, dropping in to the Scottish records office is not an easy option. Does anyone have any other suggestions, please?

Hi Davran
I don't have any suggestions other than perhaps trying to see the marriage on OPR if you have not already done so - if you are lucky it might give his parish of origin, though it may not! It may give an occupation - but it may not! If you have not seen it, it mght be worth ordering the OPR film from your local LDS centre (for a small fee).
The children's christenings in Renfrew might be worth seeing in the orignal as well - just sometimes there are little details which can help - occupation, location, sometimes even witnesess who are relatives ...but don't get your hopes up - sometimes the OPR entries are pretty basic and give nothing away!
If you look at wills for "Robert Knox" on Scotlands People it seems there was a Robert Knox in Renfrew back in 1567 so maybe they have been there for a while...
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for the reply. I have already looked at the OPR marriage - unfortunately it only gives Jean McIndoe's father, Hugh, and Robert's occupation as baker. I will give your idea of looking at the children's birth records a try, though. Thanks again.
