Headed to Scotland.....

Post by Vscheipel » Tue May 09, 2006 4:46 pm

Hi there!

I will be vacationing in Scotland this summer. While there, I would like to take some time to do some genealogy research.

I have been able to trace several of my ancestral lines back to the late 1700's. I have established the branches of my ancestral family tree through information I have acquired via census, birth, marriage and death registrations on the Scotland's People website. Now I would like to add some "fruit" so to speak to my tree.

I would like to expand and enhance the information I have on my ancestors and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions about places I should visit to further my research while in Scotland. I would like to use the most of my limited time. Most of my ancestors are from the Edinburgh and surrounding area.

They were tradesmen or labourers (joiners, bakers, masons, copperplate printers, quarrymen). Is there some place I can go to get more information about where they may have apprenticed, if they had their own business or worked for someone else etc. A couple ancestors were merchant seamen. Would I be able to find out which boats they worked on?

Basically, I am looking for anything that is not included in BMD registrations or census records that would give me further insight into the lives of my ancestors.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Veronica

Hi Veronica

If you are in Edinburgh I'd suggest some time spent at NAS:
www.nas.gov.uk
online catalogue at:
http://www.dswebhosting.info/NAS/dserve ... =Index.tcl

Edinburgh Central Library & The Edinburgh Room:
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/CEC/Recreat ... yhist.html
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/CEC/Recreat ... room1.html

and perhaps The Scottish Genealogy Society for a start!
www.scotsgenealogy.com
and they are all within easy walking distance of each other in the centre of Edinburgh
Best wishes
Lesley

Hullo Veronica!

That's great that you're going to be able to visit places that have only been names on certificates until now.

One place well worth visiting during your stay is the National Archives of Scotland, at the end of Princes Street, Edinburgh. There you can hunt through sassines, Kirk Session Records and much more. Take a look at the online site to get an idea of what is available.

Enjoy every minute of your visit.

Best wishes
Catriona

Thanks Lesley and Catriona for the info. I will definitely try to visit the places you both suggested while I am in Scotland!
