Hello Everyone
I am for anyone with interests in the Calderwood's from Ayrshire especially Jean Calderwood who married Robert Swan 25 August 1838 Mauchline Ayr.
Jean died possibly in childbrith on or after 25 April 1849 I don't know the exact date she died or when she was born possibly about 1807. Any info regading her birth or death would be appreciated.
Are there are living relatives out there still and did Jean have any siblings? Would love to hear from anyone.
Heather

Dear DavieDavie wrote:Greetin's Heather,
Was interesting to read this post.
I have been researching the Swan name.
I know that your Andrew (Father Robert, Mother Jean Calderwood) owned a tea room in The Saltmarket in Glasgow.
Andrew married Janet Templeton in Glasgow 1866.

Hope I'm not hijacking this post - Are you searching for all Swan names or one particular family/area
At the moment the only information I'm reasonably certain about is:-
Margaret Swan (B1827 - D5/1/1914 in Bridge of Allan, STI). She married (8/8/1847 Barony) William Mories (B c1817 Greenock - D 24/3/1873 ) a ship owner. They had 4 children that I've found (born between Bothwell, and Glasgow). (Added 19/5/06: I've now found 7 children in total, two of whom were born in England - haven't worked out how/why but seems interesting). Children born, Greenock, Glasgow, England, Bothwell.
Margaret Swan had one brother that I've found so far - William - I only know about him because he was the informant for the death of his mother.
The parents of William and Margaret were David Swan (shipbuilder) and Janet Meikle. Janet was born about 1782 and died 28/8/1862 in Springburn (Glasgow) - Blackhill Locks.

Hi Liz and Heather
I am doing the Swan research to find a confirmation of dates for Margaret McFarlane c. 1890, daughter of Walter and Mary Swan.
Several people have got in touch re the Swan side and we have been exchanging info.
LIZ: When you posted, I had a wee look through my own files to see if I had any person named Morries and came across a William Clark married to Jessie Miekle Mories, 1870, Govan Glasgow.
I will do a wee search around and see if I can come up with anything else.
HEATHER: Children of Robert Swan and Ann Arkle on LDS
Helen 1803
Robert 1807
William and Richard 1809
Mary 1811
I will see if I confirm this when I am up at Park Circus next week

I too have a Swan connection I am trying to develop. Margaret McMurray (one of my gg grandfather's sisters) married William Swan in Renfrew in 1837. I have Margaret in the 1841 census (identified as McMurray not Swan) living with her mother and with two-year-old Margaret Swan. No sign of William. l also have two other households of Swans in Renfrew in the 1851 census. No apparent conection to me but maybe of interest to someone else:
Manse St. (schedule 55)
Margaret Swan, head, widow, 59, tambourer, b. Paisley
Manse St. (schedule 56)
Janet Swan, head, widow, 56, winder, b. Rannoch, Perthshire
Mary Swan, daur, u/m 30, embroiderer
George Swan, son, u/m 26, weaver
Janet Swan, daur, u/m 24, errand girl
Archd. Swan, son, u/m 22, handloom weaver
Catherine Swan, daur, u/m 20, bleacher
Margaret Swan, daur, u/m 18, embroiderer
Elizabeth Swan, daur, u/m 16, embroiderer

Davie!!!
How brillliant to hear from you with names I recognise from my own researches! Jessie Meikle Mories is mine! Well at least very distantly. I am so glad I had no money left on SP and decided to do word search on TS!!! Margaret Mories married William Clark on 11/8/1870. Her grand-daughter Margaret Mories Clark married Robert Alexander Henderson. The Clark's were the famous thread manufacturers from Paisley (& Glasgow), and the company still exists somewhere!
If you're still with me (!!) Robert's (b2/9/1906) father (also Robert b 1873) married Edith Guthrie Morrison Stevenson (reportedly related to RL Stevenson). Robert's (b2/9/1906) sister Edith Henderson (b 1878 Manchester) was the second wife of Andrew Nicolson. My connection to all this is through Andrew - his daughter Edith (b1915) sadly died very recently. Andrew was a solicitor and was the youngest son of a family of 10, and one of his brother's was my 3xgt grandfather!
I've filled in most of my own Nicolson stuff apart from the big brick wall in the 1770s, so I started to go through the collateral lines which is how I came across the Mories/Clark/Swan people. I am seriously considering (probably wrongly) that the Swan's since they are boatbuilders/ship owners in the late 1770s and into the late 1800s, might have some connection to the Swan Hunter yards - but that's for another day when I'm really stuck!
I have Margaret Swan b 1827. She died on 5/1/1914 and the death was notified by William Clark. Margaret father was David Swan, shipbuilder and her mother was Janet Meikle b abt 1782. Janet died at Blackhill Locks, Springburn on 28/8/1862. There are several wills in the SP indexes. But the family aren't really close enough to me to justify spending the dosh! Maybe if I win the lottery ..... Haven't found David's parents yet, but Janet Meikle's parents may have been Thomas Meikle and Janet Mates - I need to check that one though.
How is Margaret Swan connected to you?
Added 22/5/06 - I've just found another Swan in my notes - Euphemia Swan who married George Nicolson Gibson. He was born 1871 and died 1903. I think I might try and find more about Euphemia now.
Liz
PS - Maybe we should move this to a Swan post since we've hijacked Angel's Calderwood one?????
