FEELING SAD.....

Post by jennovo » Fri May 12, 2006 12:03 pm

Hello everyone,
Do you remember my William Reid story? It is further down in this index.
Today I received the death certificate for 'who William said, was his mother'. Catherine Reid nee Hogg. She died in New South Wales in 1895 aged 49 years. The informant to her death was her husband David Thomson Reid who stated that there was no issue to the marriage. It is the correct person as it gives her birth place as Tranent and says she spent one year in New Zealand and 15 years in New South Wales . Also parents are correct.
Could William have been adopted or could the entry have been made incorretly? I may have found David's death cert. and have ordered that, hoping for a different outcome of course. I feel absolutely devastated at the moment. I have benn researching the Fairgrieve line (Catherine Hogg's mother) for ever - and feel connected to a lot of people. Has anyone encountered this? How can I find out if he was adopted - any ideas?
Thank you once again,
Jen.

Hi Jen

Yeah I remember your family.....I spent almost as much time as you trying to make it all fit together!! There is only one possible suggestion and this off the top of my head and I haven't yet looked at the dates etc to see if it might be possible......what if Catherine Hogg had a child before marriage?? Was the question that David answered no to specifically that their marriage had had no issue or that Catherine herself had had no children???? Might be a fine line of interpretation there........

Of course this might lend some truth the the family story that he was born in Glasgow........

Hmmm........ :-k

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean,
The transcription says "children of marriage" and next to this is NO ISSUE. Problem is, I have their marriage transcript and it gives their marriage date as 1866. William was born somewhere between 1869 and 1872 so it looks as though his parents were married when he was born. There is a lot of spelling which is incorrect so David may have been illiterate - maybe that is the problem!
Was adoption an official process in Scotland in the late 1800s?
I feel so disheartened at the moment.
Thank you,
Jen.

Oh Jen don't give up.It is so disheartening when you don't get the facts/figures to add up especially when you feel a kinship with the people you are finding.
However there may still be a connection but even if there isn't at least you have recorded the life of somebody who,may not have any descendants to do it for her.

Re adoption ..... there was no formal statutory system of adoption in Scotland until 1930.
