When Did GGGGrandmother MCGREGOR Die?.....

Post by scotincanada » Wed Mar 16, 2005 4:22 pm

Hi,

I once posed this question on the old (but very helpful!) scotlandspeople discussion forum & thought I'd give it another try.

My ggggrandmother was Mary HOUSTON (sometimes seen as HAUSTIN, AUSTIN etc.) born Dec. 1809, Trinity Gask, Perth to Peter HOUSTON & Mary STEWART (I believe). In 1832, she married Hugh MCGREGOR, in Balquhidder, Perth. They moved to Knapdale Argyll abt. 1836? After some 12 children were raised, the couple was in Greenock by 1874 - the year Hugh died. Mary is last found at 13 Logie St., Govan on the census of 1881 with 2 grown sons (Peter & John MCGREGOR) + 3 MCLARTY grandsons. She would have been 72 years old. Wondering what happened to her (or any of them) after that & when she (or any of them) died. Thank you very, very much!

Hi Mary

I don't know which records you looked at before but I had 3 credits left and I can't face the ironing ... and I found
1893 HOUSTON MARY F 76 GREENOCK WEST RENFREW 564/02 0417
1893 MCGREGOR MARY F 76 GREENOCK WEST RENFREW 564/02 0417

I know the age is wrong but as the references look the same , it might be worth a look

All the best

I'm afraid that the parents on this one are James HOUSTON and Mary McPHERSON...........

Hi Mary , David
Is the link to Peter HOUSTON & Mary STEWART definitely established ?
I ask this for two reasons: The 1881 census shows Balquhidder not Trinity Gask as place of birth for Mary (this could be incorrect of course or she could have been born/baptised in different parishes).

Secondly I took a look at the 1893 Greenock death certificate and saw the informant was James McGregor son , 23 Lyle Street. I looked at the 1891 census and found James McGregor , aged 58 , born Balquhidder , wife Catherine (Leitch) born Argyllshire living at 25 Lyle St, Greenock.

Again the age for James is 3 years out, but even still , two couples called Hugh McGregor and Mary Houston having a son James in Balquiddher within 3 years of each other is a biggish coincidence.

What do you guys think?

And most importantly can I spell Balquhidder?

Based on the naming pattern of James & Catherine's children all born Greenock....and the fact that James and Catherine were married in Greenock....and they are living there in 1881 too....I can't help but believe this is the son of your Hugh McGregor and Mary Houston. Therefore the DC in 1893 is likely the right date of death for Mary. Figuring out which set of parents belong to her is another thing altogether....altho it wouldn't be the first time that a grandson messed up on his grandparent's names!

Unfortunately the marriage cert is incorrectly linked on SP so you'll have to send a contact form.

1863 MCGREGOR JAMES LEITCH CATHERINE GREENOCK NEW OR MIDDLE RENFREW 564/01 0039 actually links to a page for early November of the same year. The couple married 3rd December.

Even without seeing the certificate I reckon his parents will be Hugh and Mary and that Sally has found the correct person.

It's possible that since James didn't know his mother's age he didn't know her parents either.

Maybe some of the middle names, Bowden, Campbell, Banner will help. Not all were christened with middle names but the sister, Ann, married Archibald McLarty in Lochgilphead in 1868 and gave the middle name Banner (Josua was a witness). Perhaps some of the other children had middle names too.

The fact that all Hugh and Mary's children seem to have been formally baptized means there is a real chance that Hugh and Mary also married and were recorded in a Church rather than just the Banns record.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

MCGREGORs

Post by scotincanada » Fri Apr 15, 2005 3:11 pm

Andy,

It's a good thing I came back - I see subsequent replies to messages don't get a notice sent to my e-mail inbox? Oh well, I'm here now! :)
Wow, that death for my great great grandmother, Mary HOUSTON MCGREGOR looks right to me - thank you!

I am puzzled though - you said Joshua MCGREGOR was a witness to his sister, Ann Banner MCGREGOR's wedding to Archibald MCLARTY in Lochgilphead 1868? Well, that makes an odd situation even odder - Hugh MCGREGOR & Mary HOUSTON had a son, Joshua Bowden MCGREGOR, Nov. 16, 1851, S. Knapdale, but it was always assumed that he died in childhood (no proof) because on April 12, 1857, Hugh & Mary had ANOTHER son named Joshua MCGREGOR who died (proven) May 6, 1863, in Ardrishaig. What's going on here, can you tell me? Did Joshua MCGREGOR # 1 survive?? Very eager for your reply! Thank you!

Hi folks,

I think I have my answer to my title question and have the date of my great great grandmother's death, and now I'm interested anew in the marriage of her daughter, Ann Banner MCGREGOR to Archibald MCLARTY that took place August 27, 1868 in Lochgilphead, Argyll. What are the names of Archibald's parents given on the marriage registration? And again, can someone confirm that Joshua MCGREGOR, Ann's younger brother, was a witness? We thought he was already deceased by then! Thank you!

Hi Mary,

Have you registered with the Scotlands People website? If you do, you will be able to see all these details for yourself and print out a copy for your records.

All the best,

Hi Mary
I had a look at the marriage and Joshua McGregor was noted as a witness, although it would be handy for your own records to get a copy for yourself.
