Hi Cathy
 Good find!
I wonder what they really meant? Is it one of these terms like idiot or imbecile which had a more precise meaning then, I wonder?

I liked this one, found recently:
Jean SCOTT W 73 F Collessie, Fife, Scotland
Rel: Mother
Occ: Aged

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
probably his age. A good innings back then, though by no means a record.

In the 1851 Census, under Occupation, the enumerator has written "None whatever". A bit hard on a 72 year old widow.

Catriona:

Wonder what that enumerator would think of the term 'domestic engineer' and the many studies assigning fair market value to all the duties of a wife and mother in these times.

And that 72 year old wouldn't have had the modern conveniences of the current home makers!

Furthermore - what was he doing for a living, but pushing a pencil
