I have an ancestor whose name was "Blue" and I have read that this name was originally McGurman and variants. I would be interested to hear what anybody has to say about why this happened. I have read that it was because Gaelic names were too difficult to pronounce/spell but mine doesn't seem too difficult. Any other explanations or thoughts on the matter?

It may well have been a translation of sorts.mallog wrote:I have an ancestor whose name was "Blue" and I have read that this name was originally McGurman and variants. gorm, ghorm, ghuirm, guirme, gorma all translate to green-blue
(the same word as gave its name to the Cairngorm mountains).
All the best,
