Can anyone help me with my gr gr grandparents who were married at St. Cuthbert's Edinburgh on 30 November 1848. They were Henry John Simpson and Jane Hogg.
They came to Australia on the Lord George Bentick in 1849.
The only other information is as follows:
Register of Births & Baptisms - St Cuthberts 1827
"Simpson - John Simpson, mason, Belleville, Kings Park and Marianne Currie his spouse had a son born eighth March named Henry."
Hope someone can assist with information on Henry, his father John, Marianne Currie or Jane Hogg
Henry John Simpson and Jane Hogg.....

Hello Val,
On the I G I site I found an entry of Marriage for John & Marrianne.
Also a birth for Henry and a Mary Ann Simpson born April 1829
all at St Cuthberts Edinburgh.
There are 2 marriages listed on the Scotlands People site for that year ,
which would give you more data
Unfortunately I have no credits at the moment or I would have uplifted them for you .
Hope this helps.
Cheers,

Re: Henry John Simpson and Jane Hogg.....
Hi Val,
Hope this reaches you, as it is an old post that I am replying to.
Henry Simpson and Jane Hogg are my great great great grandparents through their daughter Jacobina Simpson. Whilst I don't have any more info than you do on Henry's parents, I do have the names of Jane Hogg's line further back.
Also, i have a big juicy bit of gossip on Henry. Not sure if you have stumbled across this yet, but after moving to Victoria in 1849 and having 5 children - Henry deserted his wife Jane on 8/12/1862. Said he was going to find work on a racecourse and never came back! Jane had to move work for her brother John Millar Hogg, an engineer, as housekeeper to make ends meet. In 1881, Henry was spotted working at a hospital and was arrested for wife desertion. he had changed his name to George Hector Gordon and remarried in 1866 to Jane Rooney. He was charged with Bigamy and ended up in Pentridge prison in Melbourne for around 18 months! He completely denied being Henry right until the end, although he had a deformed thumb which gave him away and on his second marriage, he stupidly stated Mary Anne Currie as his mother, JOHN Gordon, a stone mason, same christian name and occupation as his father and the same date of birth etc. he claimed he came on a different boat to Australia, but there was no record of him on that boat and plenty of witnesses recognised him as Henry - quite a funny story - not so funny for Jane with 5 young kids to bring up though.
Jane Hogg's parents were: JAMES HOGG & JACOBINA MILLAR. Married 25 August 1826.
Jacobina MILLAR's parents were : JOHN MILLAR & JANE SCOTT (b 1777, died 23/3/1855). Married 4/10/1804.
Jane Scott's parents were : ADAM SCOTT (b 1755, Edinburgh, died USA????) & JACOBINA LISTON (b. 1752). They were married 26/9/1775.
Hope this helps, but after 4 years since this post, I suspect you might have this info already?
How are you related to henry and Jane?
Regards
Katie

Hi Katie
Welcome to the madhouse that is TalkingScot
Although we enjoy helping folk resolve their genealogical conundrums we also have the very human weakness of loving a juicy bit of gossip.
What a way to start your first post here. thank-you.

Re: Henry John Simpson and Jane Hogg.....
Hi Katie,
So pleased to get your message and thanks to Talking Scot for sending a message.
I didn't know about Henry's straying so that's great to know.
James Hoggs parents were John Hogg born 1770 and Margaret Crombie 1775 - 1845.
How do I fit in, well Henry S and Jane H had a daughter named Colina born in Charlotte Plains, Victoria Australia and she is my great grandmother.
Colina Simpson married Robert Johnson, an Irishman from Killoscully in Tipperary on 10 October 1873 in Daylesford, Victoria.
One of their children, Ellen Johnson born 1875 in Daylesford married Walter Charles Wain on 22 March 1899 in Daylesford.
They had 7 children and one was my Mum, Mabel Colina Wain, born 19 March 1908 and died 29 January 1970.
I can send you more on these families if you need it.
Do you have any information on Henry and Janes children? I only have birth dates.
My email address is walhay(insertatsignhere)optushome.com.au
Where do you live? I'm in Victoria, Australia
Thanks for your help and hope to hear from you again
Cheers

Re: Henry John Simpson and Jane Hogg.....
Thank you to admin and hello everyone.
Sorry to drag this one out of the darkness of the archives but I feel this discussion may resolve a huge brickwall and a silence in the family about my great-grandfather and his parentage.
Its regarding a John Simpson who according to SA BDM books and website married a Maria Clayfield in 1881 in Mt Gambier SA. He listed his age as 24 and his father as Henry. The family story is that Henry and his wife perished on ship and John was left at Portland docks to fend for himself at a young age only to be 'rescued' by the Kidman family and given work/training to be a cabinet maker. He had 1 Son William John who lived in Mt Gambier and Naracoorte SA and 3 daughters. Willie joined the Caledonian Society in the South East and was Bandmaster of the Brass Band. This gives the hint to his family background i.e Scots and Aberdeen always seemed to be mentioned.
So a John Simpson born about 1857 with Henry as his father. Does this match anything on the Hogg/Simpson story?
Thanks to all who can help
David

Hi David and a warm
to TalkingScot.
Neither Val or Katie have visited here since 2010 but if they still have the same e-mail address(es) your post will be notified to them. I hope so as this is a tale with a few hidden twists and turns. I'd keep my fingers crossed but it interferes with my typing

Hi David,
My Henry Simpson and his wife certainly lived in Victoria for many years so I don't think your people are related. See Katie's piece on Henry and his straying ways which are supported by numerous articles in newspapers all over Australia.
Sorry I can't help
Cheers

Re: Henry John Simpson and Jane Hogg.....
Thank you Val and good to see your email still works
In one of the stories on Trove it mentions Henrys middle name as John. Does the Scottish naming patterns then follow that his middle name is a Paternal link and therefore he would pass John onto a child , either 1st or next after , etc?
I have found a John Simpson in Hamilton Country Vic in 1872 in a Ploughing match as a ''Boys Event'' ie under 18. Hamilton and Daylesford isn't that far at all if I recall
I am still holding hope Val. Don't forget ''family stories ' can be changed to avoid embarrassing details that we think are silly but previous generations couldn't hide quick enough.
