How nice! I have just found out that one of my ancestors Caroline McDade married Edward McIver, brother to James McIver, founder of the Barras. I am chuffed!

Hi Nina,
Lucky you! I just love the Barras and have been going there since I could toddle!! Have you ever visited? I love all the characters especially the older ones and would recommend the wash-house cafe. My ancestors had shops and small businesses around Glasgow (never very profitable) but they were "salt of the earth" types and I suppose that's why I feel so at home with them. Can't stand the idiots who sell counterfeit dvds, cigs etc. hope the polis get rid of them for good.
Regards, Fergie.

Hi Fergie,
I did visit, many years ago when we went back to Scotland when I was a teenager. My Mum wanted to show me the Barras, Kelvin Hall and other places she and Dad had told us about. Unfortunately the day we went everything was shut down, and so I wasn't able to get the 'feel' of the place. She then took me to a little shop nearby where she used to go and eat mussels and whelks which she picked out of the shell with a toothpick and had a big mug of mussel juice. A bit too icky for a teenager!!!
I contacted one of my relatives, who was a great niece to Caroline McDade. She told me that her grandfather (other side of the family) used to work on old furniture for Maggie McIver (the brains behind the Barras, if you read the info on the web) and often brought home things Maggie didn't want, but she had no idea of the family connection (this was due to the niece being orphaned at a young age and being brought up by her mother's side of the family). So it is the little stories in the background that help make everything even more interesting!
