There are a couple on the IGI ( www.familysearch.org ) of those names and they had a James - what age was your James at the time of his death? Was he about 80yrs?

There is a James Gall who seems a little younger:
Gall James, age 42, admission date:12 Feb.1862, reference 2282

In 1881 census at http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... t1881.html
there is a James Gall who looks like he might be your one - was yours a carpenter on his death entry?

Hi Duncan
Happy to help. :D
If you do a parent search on the IGI - put parents names in only, and country, you should bring up the list of children above. For each individual record the date of birth is also given.

To request further information about an entry in the Dundee poor registers, on this page:
http://www.fdca.org.uk/poor_index.htm
- contact details are: Dundee City Archives, 21 City Square, Dundee DD1 3BY, or email archives@dundeecity.gov.uk
"The original registers contain further information on each pauper, including place of birth, number of children, occupation, reason for admission, and date of discharge/removal."
Good luck with your searching. Look forward to hearing how you get on.
Best wishes
Lesley
