William Budge 1880 Caithness to Canada .....
I am looking for William Budge who went to Canada in 1906
His brother David followed him a few years later.
David had an address in Manitoba but I have no address for William
I can find nothing on William, so if anyone has Caithness / Budge connections could you please ask around, I would be so glad of any snippet of information which I can chase up.
Many thanks
Freida Murray

Hi Freida
Welcome to TalkingScot! If you're certain that William's birth year was 1880 and Caithness then this family looks very likely to be his in the 1881 census due to the presence of both a William and a brother David....

Dear Freida,
The only Scotland-born William I can find in the 1911 Canada census was born in March 1868. This would clearly not be the same one that Jean found in Caithness. Is there any more information you can give us to help pinpoint the correct reference? Birthdate? Spouse or children's names?

William Budge 1880
Thank you both for prompt replies - JustJean and SarahND,
That is not my William Budge in Watten census.
He was born in Occumster, Latheron on 30 Dec 1880
his parents were William Budge and Margaret Sutherland
That would not appear to be him on the Canada census either!
This is not an easy search !
Many thanks to you both,
Freida Murray

The closest I can come to your details is:
Bus? Wm born Dec 1880, immigrated 1906, a cook for the Doslake Timber Camp, Eastern Construction Co North of Transcontinental Railway
Thunder Bay, Ontario
BUT, this one says he was born in England. Could be a mistake. Do you have any idea of his profession?
Are you sure of the year he came to Canada? Since it is clear that he is misindexed, I would need more information to try to track him down.

William Budge 1880
Yes thank you , you have the right family - Margaret was his mother and later she married William Budge the father in 1883.
I have all the Scottish records - I am lost after he arrived in Canada in 1906.
William Budge went to Canada 1906 age 25yrs . He sailed from Glasgow on SS Sicilian stopping at Halifax . He was going to Winnipeg.
The Master of the ship was John A Fairfax
He was a Stone Mason.
On the Passenger List, linked with his and others' names was written ''FRANK ALBRA''
The other names were:
MacCulloch Wm 64 F.S.
" Wm 15
Reid F. 22 Mason
" Alex 27 Stone Cutter
Anderson James 24 Mason
Turner John 20 F L
" Robert 16 F L
So it seems they were a group of Stone Masons
and Frank Albra might have been an agent?
Again many thanks for helping,
Freida Murray

Found James Anderson working as a bricklayer in Winnipeg. The image is unclear, but looks like he says he came over in 1907
After that, I draw a blank. Just can't find William.
Very frustrating, since I remember having seen a stonemason before I knew I should look for one-- but I can't find him again!
Maybe if I take a break he will take pity on me and reappear.

William Budge 1880
Well thank you SarahD,
It is not easy. By the way do you have an address for James Anderson.
I wonder if a group of them lived near each other, perhaps they were
all working on the same job.
I found his brother David Budge had joined the Military Service in 1918 and the address given then was 529 Montrose Ave, East Kildonnan, Winnipeg
his service no was 544980 J.C.
he was a Plumber to trade and single
Then I found a marriage in 1921 of a David Budge to Ann Metrosky - is this the same David I wonder ??
place of mariage was WPG
Many thanks
