Born to be poor?.....

Post by JimM » Mon May 22, 2006 3:58 pm

According to today's "Daily Record".... (slow news day?)

Scots researchers have discovered a poverty "gene"
Basically what they have discovered is that if you come from a poor background the you are pre-disposed to "premature ageing and negative attitudes to work"

It goes on.. "he believes the condition dates back to Victorian times and has has been passed down the generations - possibly holding the key to Scotland's poor health record".

Well that's me snookered..... if my lot are anything to go by :(

What a load of tripe why do people put the lack of monetary rewards with a bad work ethic?
I have worked since I was sixteen &yet i would class myself as poor-don't own my own home car etc. Most of my rellies worked hard all their days for little monetary reward but they do have the happiness gene & maybe that is what has held us back.We would far rather work at something that gives us satisfaction than something that pays well but we hate.
I have rellies who have done extremely well for themselves professionally& in monetary terms too.We are at almost 100% employed excepting those with health issues, studying & even there they have part-time jobs.
My younger sister has brought her children up so that
they were working even at weekends when at school they contributed to the household. If they couldn't find work they did more at home. They are all working and or studying now. They were always aware of the household budget too.
My nephew(elder sister)graduated from
GlasgowUni with a Masters but couldn't get work so he started his own company which is taking off.Not bad for the son of a joiner& a Local Government Officer. Her younger daughter is in the middle of a Buisness
HND depite having two young children & starting off as a single parent.
So yes I think bad health is caused in some cases from poverty & maybe workshyness too-what about Hooray Henrys are they genetically predisposed to a bad attitude to work too???

Hi All

What a bunch of nonsence! Has anyone looked at the hours of work that the workers in the 19th century had to do? They had to work from early morning till late at night. On one government report, it was suggested that to help children get some education, that their work hours should be reduced to TEN HOURS A DAY!

If you are born rich, you definitely have an advantage, with education, old boys network, also a family push to succeed, etc.

I have no doubt that there are lazy, unambitous, people in this world, but to call this genetic is ridiculous! I wonder about the genes of the people who authored this nonsense.

Regards,

Sheila

Certainly doesn't hold true in my family

Each generation seems, on average, to have bettered itself in the employment field.

Unskilled labourers have semi-skilled sons, journeymen as Grandsons, educated great grandsons and the current generation have a sprinkling of University degrees - who knows what the pre-schoolers may achieve.

Hi Jim

You've heard of throwing the cat among the pigeons ?

This time it 's hawks

If we all gather to show JustJean (sorry OJJ !) around maybe you shouldn't come. Might be dangerous.
