Please Help I can't find my great granny.....

Post by sweetpea » Tue May 23, 2006 9:09 pm

I have lost my great grandmother on the 1901 census! She was a Catherine McLaren Abernethy born in 1888 in Glasgow to Alexander Abernethy and Martha McLean Collins. Both of her parents died before 1899 yet I can't find her on the 1901 census anywhere.
I know she was in Glasgow in 1910 (Cathcart) when she married my great grandfather but she has disappeared between. She didn't appear to have been living with any close family.

Can anyone help?

Hi

Sorry if I'm asking the obvious! Have you checked England? I ask because my great aunt also missed a Census in Scotland in 1891 because she left to be a childrens' nurse in Kent, but had returned to Edinburgh to get married (husband from Gamrie, Banffshire - so I'm not quite sure how they met!!) by the next one.

Thanks for your replies, I have looked at the one in St Rollox but am not sure it is her as she appears to be living with her parents? Would it say daughter if she had been adopted ot fostered? The people that she is living with are from Shetland, where Alexander's family were originally from. I suppose they could be distant cousins etc? This seems strange as she had many other natural aunts and unlces?

Do you know if therer was any was to check if she was formally adopted?. On her marriage certificate it gives the names of her birth parents?
