Scots in Gibraltar .....

Post by SarahND » Wed May 24, 2006 3:09 pm

On the 1866 death certificate of Clementina Farquharson or Ruxton (1st marriage) or Giles (2nd marriage), her father is given as Charles Farquharson in Gibraltar (deceased). On what I believe to be her birth certificate (1795 in London), his name is James. However, whatever his first name, his wife (possibly Catherine according to the birth record) is reported by family tradition to have been from Gibraltar and the marriage to have taken place there. Would anyone know how to go about finding records of Scots in Gibraltar in the late 18th century (if such a thing is possible)?

Thanks for any ideas,

Sarah

P.S. Her christening place, as given in the IGI, is reported as Saint Vincent Street Scotch Church, Stepney, London, England. I guess it was okay to use the term “Scotch” for other than the drink in 1795, as David indicated in his post the other day :!:

There's also a good chance of an associated military/naval record.

Thanks, David!
It looks as though I will need to write the Civil Status and Registration Office. If I get a useful reply I will post it in case anyone else needs the information down the road. I had already seen the St Andrew’s Kirk site and unfortunately, the records only go back to 1840. You’re right about the military record, I think. It’s said he was in the navy. I will try looking in that direction.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, when you should be packing your bags instead :D
