Photographer in Jamaica Street Glasgow1800's possibly

Post by And It Makes Me Shine » Wed May 24, 2006 10:43 pm

I am currently working through old family photos and one has totally stumped me. It is a postcard type photo, with no space for a stamp with a signature of the photographer stamped on the bottom right hand corner. Ends in "ber" and the address 83 Jamaica ..... Glasgow. It is only a head and shoulders shot so I have no indication from dress style although I have a feeling it is quite old.

Please any help appreciated.

Hi Jim,
This might be a wee bit too late? Valuation Rolls of 1913-14. Type Jamaica Street into the "Where" box on this page.

http://www.theglasgowstory.com/valsearc ... 3e562d2e3a

Click on - VR 1913-14, Ward 10, p088.

Or just go straight to the page!

There is a photographic studio at 83 Jamaica St - but name doesn't end in "ber".

If you can manage into The Mitchell you could look at the address, and Photographers too, in the Glasgow Directories for earlier years.
Maybe the studio was occupied by various photographers throughout it's history.

Thanks the first is not it but the second I have emailed the person with the website for any more detail. The reason I am so interested in this one is I have photos from 1880's etc but all my family stayed in Hamilton and it is strange to see why they went to Glasgow unless it was that early that Hamilton didn't have a photographer. Fingers crossed.

Hi all

It's interesting to note just how many studios were on Jamaica Street! I have unknown photos from these studios:

Anderson - 56 Jamaica Street Glasgow (this one is an early one I think 1860's maybe)
R. T. Dodd - 65 Jamaica Street Glasgow (he was noted as being a sucessor to J. Eowman?)
Turnbull & Sons - 10 Jamaica Street Glasgow (this one is later I think probably 1880's at least)

But none at 83 or ending with a ber...

Best wishes
Jean

I have had some photos in my 'unknowns' for a while now & have only just found that I have a Scottish connection last month.

The photos I have were taken by a ANDREW BOWMAN of

74 Jamaica Street Glasgow.

Jamaica Street must have been a studio village

A Google search produced a reference to photographers at 83 Jamaica Street in an article about "Buffalo Bill's Wild West show".
http://www.tnais.com/bbis/images.html wrote:Annie Oakley, the legendary markswoman, was one of the leading attractions of the Wild West show during the Glasgow season. By Christmas Eve, she had discarded her more accustomed buckskins and broad-brimmed hat in favour of a chic tartan ensemble. A photograph of Annie thus attired, taken by Messrs Watson & Wilson, whose studios were at 83 Jamaica Street, still survives, and is fully accounted for. There is another photograph of Annie in the same outfit, but whether it was taken on the same or another oaccasion is not known.
http://freespace.virgin.net/cristian.antonioletti/ gives "Stephen" as the photographer at 83 Jamaica Street in (probably) 1865.

All the best,

AndrewP

I have one by J. Whyte of 37 & 75 Jamaica Street, probably about 1888-90. From the number of photographs that my ancestors brought with them to Canada, it seems that posing for photos was the "in" thing to do for the last part of the nineteenth century, even for ordinary working class Glaswegians.
