Marriage of Donald MacDonald to Jane McKillop circa 1862....

Post by emanday » Tue May 30, 2006 1:15 am

I'm at a complete stop here as I can't find anything about either of them. Any help or advice would be great.

ScotlandsPeople site seems to have nothing.

These are the parents of my great grandfather, Charles, who married Margaret Crichton in 1889.

You should be able to track them in earlier census records on ScotlandsPeople according to the children's birth locations.

Here is a listing from the IGI to give you a good starting point:

1. ARCHIBALD MCDONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 15 JUN 1869 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

2. CHARLES MC DONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 22 NOV 1863 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

3. JESSIE MCDONALD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 09 MAR 1871 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

4. CHRISTINA MCDONALD - International Genealogical Index

7. MARGARET CAMERON MCDONALD - International Genealogical Index

You also note where William and Margaret state their own births occured so this may help you out in that area too!

Best wishes
Jean

Dropping the "a" from MacDONALD will quickly give you .....

1862 MCDONALD DONALD MCKILLOP JANE BLYTHSWOOD GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 0094

And 5 credits will then give you the image!

A further few credits will find you the death register entries for both mothers shown in the 1862 marriage register entry.......

#-o Talk about having to having to start thinking a different way!!

Both of you have provided me with so much information and taught me, in two messages, that I have to be more open minded....

The "a" in MacDonald thing was because my grandmother, (her maiden name), used to get very irate when it was misspelt and I would never have thought of removing the a in searches (though I did use soundex with no result like these).

I am so glad I decided to post my question here and I will be back. There are others I am having difficulty with, but I want to get this part sorted first - it might very well help with them too.

Thank you both so much. =D>

Hi Emanday

So glad to have been able to assist :D ....and glad you've learned a new trick. When nothing else is working you have to start considering the options you've previously discarded. Wildcards are a truly invaluable tool when dealing with Scotland's People searches. Really aggravating to think that one little "a" was all that was standing between you and your search results.....but no longer...... :D

Best wishes with your future searches....and don't forget to ask again if you get stuck!

Jean

Hi Emanday,

I also have MacDonald relatives and I've found on SP that if you search for Macdonalds using soundex you don't get any McDonald results.

However if you search for McDonald using soundex you get both Mac and Mc results.

Hope that explanation makes sense!

Thanks Caroline. \:D/

I'm going to add that to the growing list of "new tricks" in my searches for my ancestors.

Must say, it never occured to me that the Soundex system could have such shortcomings.
