Died at Sea.....

Post by bryoung » Tue May 30, 2006 4:30 pm

I have found two "East Lothian" ancestors on familysearch.org who "died at sea" :(

They were Elizabeth Young [1864 - 1867] and Helena Young [1863 - 1867], daughters of James Duncan Young.

James emigrated to America as I have found him in the 1880 census in Cedar County, Illinois so I presume that the family made the crossing in 1867.

Is anyone got advice on where would be the best place to locate details of their deaths :?:

Hi Bryoung

I had some credits on 1837online and looked up the deaths at sea from 1865 - 1871. Unfortunately there were only 4 Youngs - initials C, J, N and Mrs Young, so not wee Elizabeth and Helena.

1837online has births, marriages and deaths of passengers at sea "including British subjects and other nationalities". I'm not at all sure if that would include Scottish people

There are likely other sources, but as my credits expire on 1 June I thought it was worth a try.

At least we can rule out 1837online as a possible source.

Incidentally if anyone reading this could use a lookup in the next day or so, let me know - the credits are useless to me.

Best wishes

later : The Family Record Centre apparently holds Scottish BMDs at Sea but might involve a visit?

If you go to www.familysearch.org, select Pedigree Resource file on the left and then perform a search using their names you will get the submitter's name and address. Perhaps he can tell you the source.

Or, the pedigree file submitted is available to purchase for $19.00 from the Family History Library.

Another alternative might be to contact your local LDS family history center and see if they have copies or can get a copy for you.

Hi Bryoung,
You had me confused for awhile. You must mean Cedar Township, Knox County, Illinois. There is no Cedar County in that state :D

In the 1900 census David and his wife Marian are still there. She says that she has had 9 children and 7 are still living. So it was only the two little girls who died :(

They also say that they came over in 1866 (maybe at the end of the year and it was 1867 before they arrived?)

Sorry I'm not helping with the two girls' death information, but you are lucky that they settled in Illinois, since the marriage and death records are online for free at:

http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/depar ... bases.html

It won't help with the girls, but might with the rest of the family.
