Looking for Effie.....

Post by Maud Jarvis » Sat Mar 19, 2005 2:32 pm

:?:

Searching for any information about EFFIE COLVEN (Nee Grant)

Effie was born in Derby 1869, but in 1881 census was living with her grandmother Euphemia Martin, formerly Grant (Nee Nelson)
her son George Nelson Grant, settled in Derby where he married (second wife) Mary Hannah Copeland, for reasona unknown as yet, the children appear to have been scattered, Effie with grandmother in Edinburgh, one son in lodgings, another in an Industrial School (Fechney, no records obtainable) in Perth, Mabel my grandmother, was then in 1881, with her parents, some later she too must have been with grandmother, but she was later sent to Canada (in 1889) arranged by Effie.

Effie married in 1897 to THOMAS COLVEN , son of John Colven and Margaret (nee Lamb) they appear to have come from Berwick.

in 1901 Effie & Thomas were living in Anderston Glasgow, then Thomas died in August 1901, from then there has been no trace of Effie, I searched the Scotspeople site to see if she remarried but no success, I could not find her death either (although deaths only went up to 1953 at the time) I have also tried the English BMDs again with no success, so she did not appear to have returned to Derby.

Any information would be greatly appreciated if anyone knows of a link to the Colven family that could help? or know of Effie, I have been searching for some considerable time now and canot think of any other avenue to search.

Can you help???

Hi Maud,

Have you searched using any ofthe other variants of the name Effie? Euphemia, Phemie, Phamie, Fay, and there are probably more that I have not thought of.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello Maud,

Effie may well have re-married and possibly more than once. If she did so in England then her death would have been registered only under the last surname by which she was known. You may need to slog through the English marriages to see if Effie Colven married anyone, and it was only from 1911 that the spouse's name was listed in the index. I found nothing likely on SP or FreeBMD.

John

Hi Maud
I think I have found a possible entry for Effie on the outward passenger lists
- a Mrs Effie Colven, aged 31 occupation housewife with son George aged 5 travelled on the SS Mongolian 25th April 1903 from Glasgow to Canada.
The ships destination was Halifax, but their destination was given as what looks like Lumsden, NWT ( North West Territories ? )

On SP there is the birth of George Nelson Colven to Thomas Colven and Effie Grant in 1896 , before they were married.

So the passenger list MIGHT be Effie and son George, although the ages are slightly off.

The 1911 Census for Canada can be searched at www.automatedgenealogy.com or via an Ancestry subscription that includes access to Canadian records.
There may be an inward record for the SS Mongolian at www.collectionscanada.ca. ( Site doesn't seem to be working for me today) .

Hope this helps

Hi Maud:

Following up on Sally's suggestion, I located the reference to the Mongolian which set sail from Glasgow in April 1903, unfortunately the ships records are not available on line, so perhaps you could order the microfilm through your local LDS Family Centre.

From: http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

Ship: MONGOLIAN
Shipping Line: Allan Line Steamship Co.
Departure Port and Date (yyyy/mm/dd): Glasgow, Scotland - 1903-04-25
Londonderry, Ireland - 1903-[04]
Port and Date (yyyy/mm/dd): Halifax, N.S. - 1903-05-06
Remarks: List Number: 235
Reference: RG 76
Microfilm: T-497

A search for the placename Lumsden produced 2 references which were part of the North West Territories, until 1905 when boundaries were redefined and the province of Saskatchewan was created. Lumsden is near Regina.

Looking for Effie

Hi
grannysrock & also paddyscar

Oh my goodness grannysrock, my heart is jumping with excitement, just thought I would have a check of the emails and what wonderful news you have sent to me!!

I would think that this is most definately "my" Effie especially because her son is named George Nelson, that was her father`s name, and also her brother. Her husband had died in 1901, so this explains why she was travelling alone with only her son

I will carry on checking as much as I can tomorrow, I do have ancestry for the UK and this also contains the cenus for Scotland for 1901, but I will also check with the Scotspeople site for the birth of the son

I can hardly wait to carry on searching now. This could also be an explanation of why I cannot trace her death here or in Scotland, she most likely remained in Canada.
She had relations in Canada because my gt aunts, the aunties of my grandmother Mabel , Grace & Laura were already living in Canada.Their maiden surnames had been changed from Geoghan to Gagan when they were sent to Canada in 1885, and they both married and remained there.

So there could be a possibility she may have gone to one of them perhaps
this is something I can hopefully find out, I now am hoping there could be descendants from the son, oh how lovely if there is!

Anyway, must close now and prepare my list of checks to do tomorrow, I`m much too excited to do anything tonight except make out my check list
and by tomorrow I should be much calmer (I hope!)
I do`nt take much notice of the difference in ages, most of the times these seem to be out anyway, and if I remember correctly, I do`nt think her given age was correct when she married, no doubt she wanted to knock a
bit off!

Once again, many many thanks for your help, I am most grateful, what a lovely Easter present for me, bless you. :D :D :D
