Tips Please !.....
I have been searching for my 3rd Great Grandmothers Janet Hamiltons death certificate for ages now and I have only just discovered that it was in her maiden name Short. I knew her mothers name was Margaret Houston but I have never been able to find anything on her. On Janets death certificate her mother is written as Margaret Walker, previously Johnstone formerly Short, Maiden name Houston. How do I go about finding her wedding certificate as I have no idea of the new husbands given name. Also I take it the names are in chronological order ?

One method in trying to narrow this one down is for you to track down the death certificate for Margaret Walker, previously Johnstone formerly Short, Maiden name Houston. If she died post-1855 in Scotland and the informant of her death knew the list of surnames and husbands names, then she should be indexed under all of the names that she had. Also, hoping she died post 1861, then the husbands' full names should all be given (assuming that information was known to the informant). From these you may be able to track down her various marriages.
I don't know how well you can rely on the names bing listed in chronological order.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi there
Pardon the questions but I'm a bit confused. You want to find the Marriage Certificate of who?...your Janet or her mother Margaret??? The surnames are usually named in the order that they occured on a certificate....but with that many there is a possibility that they might not be recalled correctly
! Also.....what time period would this marriage be in??
Best wishes
Jean

I am now trying to find a death or wedding certificate for Margaret Houston-Short -Johnstone-Walker to see her parents details and take the line back a generation. Margarets Daughter janet was born in 1847 the first time I have found her is in Hamilton working as a farm servant aged 14 in the 1861 census. I have a feeling I am going to have to stock up on quitea few SP credits for this one.

Hi
Your best bet is to look for her Death and hope the informant got her parents names correct....or look for a marriage after the SHORT one as that was pre-1855. What appears to be the SHORT family in 1851 is found in Stirling and even though married to Michael SHORT Margaret is named as HOUSTON. All children are named as SHORT including wee 4 year old Janet.
Best wishes

Re: Tips
Hello,
the best chance here is that the informant to her death would know her last married name and her maiden name, so search on surnames Walker and Houston with forename M*G* (for variations such as Maggie). There are 3, but bearing in mind that she gave birth in 1847, only one of those will fit.
For marriages, it depends what information the parties gave or how good the registrar was in extracting the information. However, a search on the male name from the death certificate and M*G* Johnston* will bring 3 choices. One of them is correct (it is on the LDS as well) and gives all the details, but the indexer should have recorded all names.
Regards,
John

Thank you Thank you Thank you. In the last 1 Hour I have went back 2 generations. The Michael Short in Stirlingshire is Margarets Father in Law. Therefore my GGGG GreatGrandfather. The details Sporran mentioned was spot on too, she moved to Dalserf and married a William Walker after the deaths of her other two husbands. I am still investigating all this stuff ( iNFORMATION oVERLOAD). I am away to sit in a darkened room for a while as I have spent god knows how much time and money ON sp to find nothing until NOW.
