Where Is Logie ?.....

Post by darylrodger » Mon Jun 12, 2006 10:04 pm

Can anyone help me with this question ?

I have an ancestor who married in Logie, Perthshire in December 1770;
his name was Peter Gillespie, and he married Helen Nicol or Nucol in Logie according to the O.P.R. records. The Banns mention that she came from Alloa, in Clackmannshire.

I'm having difficulty trying to find any details about him, and don't know where to look for records, should I look in the Perthshire archives ? or should I look in the archives in Clackmannanshire, where they settled ?

Thanks,

Daryl :?

Hi Daryl
I think this Parish is the only just "Logie" in Perthshire:

374. LOGIE (Bridge of Allan)
374/1 B 1688-1733 M 1688-1733 D -
374/2 B 1733-83 M 1733-83 D -
374/3 B 1783-1819 M 1783-1819 D -
374/4 B - M - D 1761-96
374/5 B 1820-54 M 1820-54 D 1822-52
For deaths 1686-1690 and 1691-1761, see transcript of the register of mortcloths (Miscellaneous Transcripts series,
ref: MT63-1)

There is also a Logiealmond and a Logierait, but they are not just Logie.

IGI has:
PETER GILLESPIE
Male
Marriages:
Spouse: HELEN NUCOL Family
Marriage: 21 DEC 1770 Logie, Perth, Scotland
(extract)
- so this is where I'd be looking first, at the marriage in the OPR, to see i any information can be gleaned form that.
Following that, the area that they settled in and had children in would be my next port of call to check the children's births in the OPR - sometimes, if you are really lucky, they give an occupation and also sometimes a location. e.g.

OPR 692(2)/7 South Leith
Hugh Ewart Ropemaker in Leith and Margaret James his spouse ADN Frances born 22nd bapd. 31st January 1796 Wit. David James Workman Walkside and John James Shoemaker in Ednburgh

And if you are very, very lucky, as in the example above, you get a couple of witnesses thrown in too!

Best wishes
Lesley
