Can anyone help me with this ?
I'm trying to find an ancestor of my hubby's, a William Rodger who was born c. 1798 +/- 2 years. I know his parents were William & Mary Rodger, and his father was a farmer. Apparently he was born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. I have his death certificate, which says he died in 1881 in Glasgow, aged 81 years. I've tried to locate his birth, and his parents etc. but I can't find anything at all!.
Does anyone have any idea's of where I can look next ?
Daryl

Hi Daryl
Have you tracked him through the census years? Might be clues to be had in there. When in 1881 did he die?
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
I've tried looking him up in the census's, but Im afraid they don't give much info. Only that he worked in New Monklands as a goods carrier.
His wife Janet died young, at the age of 30 something. Again, I can't find any details relating to her at all!.

Hi Daryl
Depending who the death informant was, it is possible that the info given may not be 100% accurate with regard to his parents. What about his children's names - do they suggest his parents names were as stated at the time of his death?
Did he state Bothwell as his place of birth on every census? Do you know of any brothers or sisters he may have had? If so it might be worth trying to find deaths for them and see if the info matches.
Still lots of questions and no answers I'm afraid
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for that. I know one of his son's was called William, so the connection with his father is there. As for his birthplace, I've only noticed a couple of references to Bothwell. I haven't tried to locate any of his siblings yet. How should I go about it ?
Regards,
Daryl

Hi Daryl
If his father was a William I'd expect his eldest son to be called William, and the name of his second daughter may be siginificant; that is, if they followed the Scottish naming pattern.
As regards popssible siblings to William, I had hoped you might have seen some other family members "passing through" in the census returns, brothers or sisters perhaps, or in-laws of some sort, but that is just a matter of luck. Any nieces or nephews etc are worth their weight in gold!
I'll keep thinking....
Best wishes

Hi Daryl
I had a look at Hugh Wallis's batch numbers for Bothwell, and looked or Rodgers, but nothing very illuminating turning up so far....
According to GROS the following OPR records exist for Bothwell:
- 625. BOTHWELL
625/1 B 1671-1819 M 1692-1702 D -
625/2 B - M 1761-90 D 1754-1819
625/3 B 1820-54 M - D -
(Separate index)
625/4 B - M 1827-54 D 1820-29
625/5 Index to B 1820-54
- so the years you are interested in would seem to be covered, but bear in mind there may be gaps in the information which are not indicated in the above list.
Best wishes
Lesley
