John Sneddon, Snadon, or any other spelling.....

Post by maureenb » Wed Jun 14, 2006 5:43 pm

Can someone please helpme find my missing Gt Gt Grandfather.
The variations in the spelling of Sneddon are not helping
John Sneddon married Susan Ferguson in Alloa, Clackmannan on 4th Nov 1840. They had 8 children
James b 1841, John b 1842, William b 1845 all in Alloa, then Agnes b 1849, Alexander b 1850, Janet b1852 all in Bannockburn, then Jane b 1854 in Sauchie & Robert b 1856 in Bothkennar. They were in St Nianians in 1851 & Bothkennar in 1861, where they remained until Susan died in 1865, when John reported the death. On both Census , John's birth year is 1821.....Then John seems to have vanished into the ether:(
I have tracked, Marriages & deaths of all the children except Jane & deduced from the marriages that John was alive when William married in 1866 & was alive when Janet married in 1872. Cannot find John on the 1871 Census, though. Then is reported as deceased on the Marriages after 1872.
I have checked the 1881 English, US & Canadian Census data... but am really desperate to find him before I bankrupt myself on Scotlands people & at Register House.
I would really welcome any suggestions or help that anyone can give me

Hi Annette,
thanks for taking the time to reply.
If the one you mean died in Polmont, he & Eliz Simpson had a son Andrew
in 1836, so I pretty much discounted him.
But thanks gain for the reply
Maureen

I assume you have already seen and ruled out the one in Hickory, Mercer County, Pennsylvania in 1870? (a coal miner, born in Scotland). What was his profession?

Sarah

Hi Sarah,
thanks for the reply.
I am at the stage of not knowing what I have seen... I have been looking for him for so long:(
His profession was Engine Keeper at a Colliery... so it could be possible.
Where did you find this & can you please supply me with the details
Thanks for trying to help... much appreciated
Maureen

Here is the household, in Hickory, Mercer County, Pennsylvania in 1870

Cook Mary, 28, Keeps house, Scotland
Cook Jennet, 8, At School, Scotland
Jack Martha, 24, Keeps House, Scotland
Jack Duncan, 4, Pennsylvania
Jack Martha, 1, Ohio
Cook David, 36, Coal Miner, Scotland
Sneddon John, 45, Coal Miner, Scotland
Jack William, 24, Coal Miner, Scotland

Do the Cooks and the Jacks mean anything to you?
His age is a bit off, but that is often the case.

By 1880 the Jacks and Mary Cook are in Elk Mountain, Carbon County, Wyoming, but no sign of John Sneddon anywhere-- which works, if he was supposed to be dead by then.

Also no sign of him in 1860 in the U.S., which also fits.

Well... I don't know if this is the right person, but it is one more possibility to toss into the pot!

All the best,
Sarah
