Nicoll/Buchanan/Buchannan.....

Post by anice » Wed Jun 14, 2006 11:42 pm

Hi.... I would love to find where my to my G.G.G. Grandmother went after 1841. Ann Nicoll b.c. 1810 Angus (?Liff Benvie) married John Buchannan - Weaver - 4th Dec. 1835 Dundee her father shown as Pet (sic) Nicoll on the OPR marriage entry.

1841 Census Small's Lane Small's Wynd Dundee

John Buchanan 25 Weaver
Ann 25
Charles 5 All b. Angus.
John 1
Andrew Nicoll 25 Flax Dresser

John died 1850 Dundee from this point I can find no trace of Ann, not on 1851 Census neither are her sons.

Charles was my G.G.Grandfather and I can trace him from his marriage in Dundee in 1858 until his death. Found no re-marriage or death for Ann Nicoll/Buchanan on SP nor re-marriage on IGI, ?death prior to 1855 this seems unlikely as son John's marriage cert. 1865 only shows father John Buchanan as deceased and gives Ann's maiden name as McNicoll which would appear to be in error.

Any pointers as where to go next would be great.

Anita

Other names researching - Bowman, Brown, Duthie and Gorrie - Angus

Hi Anita
There is a Charles Buchannan in Dundee in 1851, aged 14 who might be worth checking on SP. You may have seen that one already?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley.....Thank you for the reply. The Charles on the 1851 Census was not mine :(

As this was my first query I appreciated :D getting a reply, will now work on submitting my other brickwall.

Hi Anita
Oh bother, that was a bit of a disappointment - thought we had him there...

It just kinda highly likely that he is in Dundee somewhere - he's there in '41 and married there in '58. Any address given for him on his marriage entry which might help - what area of Dundee was he living in at that time? Good chance he might still have been with his mother in 1851, aged about 15, but maybe this is not the case by the time he was married 7 years later. Did he die in Dundee?

The IGI is only giving up the two children you already know of:

CHARLES ROBERTSON BUCHANNAN - International Genealogical Index
Male Birth: 17 JUN 1836
Male Christening: 03 JUL 1836 Dundee, Angus, Scotland

JOHN BUCHANNAN - International Genealogical Index
Male Birth: 10 DEC 1839
Male Christening: 29 DEC 1839 Dundee, Angus, Scotland

Seems quite unusual for the times for them to have had only 2 children.

I wonder, could this be her applying for poor relief in 1871? ...Even though the age seems a it out - in worst case by about 10years, at best by about 7 years, given her age as 25 in the 1841= 25-29

The original registers contain further information on each pauper, including place of birth, number of children, occupation, reason for admission, and date of discharge/removal. The registers are available for inspection in Dundee City Archives. To request further information about an entry in the poor registers, contact Dundee City Archives, 21 City Square, Dundee DD1 3BY, or email archives@dundeecity.gov.uk but remember to include ALL the data from the index entry concerned, including name, date of admission and reference.
Worth getting in touch with them, just in case. Either it is, or it isn't your Ann. My fingers are crossed.

Best wishes
Lesley

Ann & Charles Buchanan

Post by anice » Sat Jun 17, 2006 4:36 am

Hi Lesley

Charles address on M.C. - is Lochee no street address (same for wife although I know she resided at South Road Lochee) on the 1861 Census he is living at Dens Brae Dundee.

Charles was a Tailor and Clothier and from 1867-1882 lived at various addresses in Lochee, this from the Dundee Directories, Lochee Section by 1890 on the death of his second wife he resided at 3 Pitfour Street Dundee, dying there October 1900 and is buried in Balgay Cemetery

Thank you for the suggestion re. Poor House application I will check the Ann Buchanan there, I had seen it, never occured to me she may have applied for Poor Law, given she had two employed sons if help needed.

On his M.C. son John gives his occupation as Seaman MS address is Midtown Dundee (same as wife). John's wife and family are at North Wellington St. Dundee in 1881 - then disappear - ? emigrated.

Will keep you posted results from Poor House.

Thank's again

Anita
