I am looking for information on my grandmother, Elizabeth Richardson, born March 29, 1892 in Scotland. She told me she was from Airdrie. I have a death cerfificate showing her parents as William Richardson and Katherine Grieve. I have searched ScotlandsPeople and although I have found 5 Elizabeth Richardsons all the right age from the 1901 Census, the parents names do not match up. I tried the 1891 Census, even though she was not born yet, I thought I might find her parents and siblings.
I have written to the Scottish Episcopalian Church to see if they have any records, but have not heard back yet.
Any suggestions on where else I could look? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS
I am travelling to Scotland in Aug. and would love to find some long, lost relatives!

Thank you Jean!
As far as I know, grandmother came over around 1904, but then went back because I know she was confirmed in Edinburgh in 1907 at Holy Trinity Church. I have written the church in hopes of them having some records of the family.
Can I ask you where you found her birth record in Airdrie? And what source did you use to find her parents marriage in 1891?
I really appreicate any help you can give me. I'm kind of a novice at this!

Hi Susan
I used the Scotland's People website to search the indexes and then view the digital images of your family.
First I searched for a marriage and not being certain of the spelling of Catherine that might have been used I used a wildcard to stand in for the C or K...like so...*atherine. These are the search parameters I used....
You searched for: Male Surname: "RICHARDSON"; Use Male Soundex: Off; Male Forename: "WILLIAM*"; Female Surname: "GRIEVE"; Use Female Soundex: Off; Female Forename: "*ATHERINE*"; Year From: 1855; Year To: 1895;
There was only one match...
1891 RICHARDSON WILLIAM GRIEVE CATHERINE STEVE DALKEITH /MIDLOTHIAN 683/00 0032
Then knowing your Grandmother was born in Airdrie the following year but once again not being certain of the possible spelling used for Elizabeth I used a wildcard again...like so...
You searched for: Surname: "RICHARDSON"; Use Soundex: Off; Forename: "ELI*ABETH*"; Sex: "Female"; Year From: 1892; Year To: 1892;
and there were 8 possibles....but only this one in Airdrie....
1892 RICHARDSON ELIZABETH MILLE F AIRDRIE OR NEW MONKLAND /LANARK 651/01 0311
In this case the wildcard helped to find the marriage as it was under C when you thought it might be under K....but Elizabeth was spelled with a z and not an s....but both would have turned up in the results. Does this make sense??? Oh...also....I tend to use the * wildcard almost exclusively as it represents none, one, or any number of unknown characters. You can opt to use a ? symbol for one character but not for none. In this case the results would have been the same if the question mark was used instead of the asterisk. Oh dear....I suspect I'm making this confusing
Anyhow....you can go back on Scotlands People and purchase the images and print them out and/or save them to your hard drive. You'll learn your grandmother's parents parents names from their marriage certificate! I had a look for them on the 1901 census and did not immediately locate them so wondered if they may have left Scotland before that year.
Please keep asking questions if I've confused you. We're here to help!!
Best wishes
