I truly, truly sympathise as one who started on paper before the days of computer I lost a whole swathe of research as did my Mum-we are convinced that our rellies didn't want us to find them!!
I am extra careful now & I leave copies of everything everywhere.I submit to Family File & if worse came to worse there would be at least a little of my research there.
I am sure there are decimated forests out there from the amount of paper I use.
Good luck & it amazing how much you start to remember when you start again & I can pretty much give dates, names & marriage dates from memory of my four generation of direct Greats.

What awful luck! Don't give up - like Catriona says - it's surprising how much you do remember once you begin to reconstruct things.
Like Joette, I sympathise with you. I too started in paper and slowly moved to PC. Having lost one lot of data on the PC, my sister and I now keep a spare copy of what we're working on on each other's PC. What we have is not identical but we've kind of split the research in two and both work mainly on different bits, so we've always got something to go on. We have even been able to give what we had on PC to my cousin, although he's working on a slightly different group of families to us, when he ran into problems with his PC - at least we've never had to start from scratch again. I really feel for you - have a good strong drink (tea of course!!) and hopefully you'll get back into it.
Do you know someone who could perhaps keep a copy of your stuff on their PC? You could also email your PC info to yourself periodically so that you would never lose everything at one time. You might only lose a few days/weeks work.

That is terrible! I am always afraid that something like this will happen to me. I do keep paper files in two ring binders, in case something like this happens. I do back up my files, when I remember, onto a CD.
One good thing about SP, is that I have a lot of information there too, in case anything happens.
Good Luck,
Sheila
P.S. I think that storing an extra CD or DVD, at a relatives house, or a friends place, is a good idea
