Hi Ellen
I'm not having much luck searching for that marriage - this seems to be the only James Smith/Stone marriage:
1889 SMITH, JAMES BRODIE & STONE, JESSIE BARROWS, ST GEORGE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN

Does this seem likely? Do the middle names mean anything to you? When & where were Elizabeth Smith, Flora Smith and Nora Smith born? Might be worth finding the births as they should mention the date of the parents' marriage.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Ellen,

Have you looked at the Flora and Nora's births in 1892 and 1891 in Greenock to see if they are his? This would hopefully give the date and place of James's marriage. There is an Annie Stone living in Greenock in 1881 and there is a marriage of a James Smith to an Annie (but not Stone) in Greenock in 1891.

Hope this helps,
Annette M

There doesn't appear to be a regular marriage of James Smith to Ann* St*n* anywhere in Scotland.

Am I 99.9% positive that Annie was married before but I can't see any death of her suspected husband, John Brady, before she takes up with James. It is very possible that the first husband left her and because she wasn't legally "Free" to marry James they just lived together as man and wife.

Ann (Stone) Smith died at 13 West Blackhall Street in 1933, I suspect that James not only got her age wrong but the parents too. Catherine, the mother, died in 1910 at 13 West Blackhall Street,.

Do you have dates and places for Elizabeth, Nora and Flora?

You may have to track down Annie Stone's siblings marriages to check if Annie was a witness and what name she was using.

Annie's age on the death cert was 59 in 1933 giving a supposed birth date of 1874 there is only one other Ann Stone in the area in 1881:

Dwelling: John Street

This one married Archibald Speirs in 1902 but she died in Greenock in 1955.

There are only two Ann Stone/s of any age in lowland Scotland in 1881, both in Greenock. So it's a fair bet that since your Annie lived and died in Greenock she is the Annie Stone who married John Brady.

I'll have a wee look in the Watt library for more clues.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Ellen

If you know the names of the parents of James SMITH then have a look at www.familysearch.org, the IGI section, and search for children of the parents, since IGI also has the records extracted from the Scottish statutory records up to 1875.

There's also this possible matching record ..........

1887 SMITH JAMES STOVE MARY ANN LERWICK /SHETLAND 005/00 0044 ???

EVERYONE HOLD THE BUS !!!!!!

I've just got back from the Watt Library and my head is birlin'

We've got the WRONG SMITHS!!!

Catherine (Figgins) Smith widow of James Smith a shipwright died at 13 West Blackhall Street in 1910. An "Acquaintance" reported the death. Strange since James, the son, a Baker, should have been in the same house. The brother, Thomas had died in 1902.

However the Telegraph has this:

"James Smith, baker, son of Catherine Smith, 13 West Blackhall Street, Greenock, died 12th April 1892"

Annie (Stone) Smith died in 1932 at 13 West Blackhall Street as reported by husband James, a Maltman (A trade VERY close to a Baker)

James Smith was not married by the census of 1891. There is no sign of an Annie Stone, Brady OR Smith that fits the bill in 1891 OR 1901

It is VITAL that you get the birth certificates of your grandmother and her sisters.

There were Dora and Flora Smiths born in the 1890's but not daughters of James Smith and Annie Stone.

Nora's 1891 parents were Thomas and Margaret Matheson

An Eleanor was born in 1900 to James and Mary Hutton

I've not checked the Floras.

Stone isn't a common name in Greenock but it's VERY common in the Catholic parts of Antrim (AS is Smith and Smyth).

The Smith family I found a while ago based on Catherine being born in Ayrshire but moving to Greenock looked 99.9% correct given all the other evidence, especially the address!!

It is not them. That's why it was so important for me to check at the Watt and why I rarely, if ever, say 100% positive.

Which now creates the problem of what happened to John Brady and Annie Stone?????? (Not that you're related)
