Coy House?.....

Post by ninatoo » Tue Jun 27, 2006 11:09 am

Hi all,

Can someone please tell me what was meant by the term Coy House? The full address on the 1851 census was "Canal Coy's House, Bowling, Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton." Am I right in thinking it was the customs house?

Nina

'Coy' is simply short for 'Company'. The Canal Company's House. Probably Lock-keeper or Toll Collector.

Thanks Dave,

Yes the ancestor was a lock keeper. Thanks, I appreciate it.
