disappeared from Scotland .....

Post by wini » Wed Jun 28, 2006 10:59 am

This is very vague but if someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

I so far haven't had to look further from Scotland than England & Ireland but a couple of ancestors seem to have disappeared around the 1890's and an elderly aunt tells me that the story is they went to America, where is my starting point?

Wini:

Have you tried www.ellisisland.org ? They have loads of searchable records. Im curious about the McCallums in your line, where do they hail from?? Mine are I believe from Co Donegal and Tyrone, Then settled in the area of Cambuslang.

Karen

Hi wini

There are other immigration ports that were quite active during that time period also such as Boston and Philadelphia. Some of these are now available through Ancestry.com but it's subscription based :( . Also the US census records are available for 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 (as well as earlier ones) but these too require a subscription or access through a library.

Why not put up some names and what you do know and see if anyone can find a lead for you???

Best wishes
Jean

Karen & Jean
I haven't tried anything yet, I just wondered what the best starting point was.

Karen I don't think we have the same McCallums
Mine is Euphemia McCallum married to John Munro no date so far but their son David Munro was born in 1801 and died in 1873 all in Glasgow

The first one I can't find after the 1901 Census is Samuel MacPhie spelled all sorts of ways was born in Kilmuir in Skye in 1874 but by 1901 he was living in Glasgow with his sister Annie and B-I-L William Gunn

The other 2 were his brother & sister John (b 1869) and Dolina(b1882)
also born in Kilmuir.

It is only rumour that they did go to America but will start with the Ellis Island records and see where that gets me

Thanks for your help

Hi Wini
I've had a (not very thorough) search through the 1910 US Census, and only found one Samuel McPhee (checked several spellings), it gives the date of inmigration as 1882, dob 1866. Doesn't look like yours.
Will keep looking for you.
