Hi Folks, I've recently found my dad's sister after 50 years just by posting messages on the web and was wondering how I should proceed trying to find my dad.
His name is jack Edward Bird and he was born in London in 1928. He was last heard of working at Massey ferguson in Kilmarnock after leaving the RAF.
Where should I start and who do I contact?
Where are you Jack?.....

Hi Stephen
Welcome - I can't be of much help to you, as most of my own searching has been well in the past and I've no real experience in the area you need, but you'll find lots of expert help and guidance from others on this site.
It's worth your while having a look and the resources section on this site and also the search helps. I've found them very useful. I recall a post recently about searching forwards, so have a look for it. (If I can find it, I'll put the link here for you).
Good luck with your serach.
PS Just remembered, we're having an online tombola and you're just in time to buy a ticket - you might win help with your search - here's the link

Hi Stephen
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
There are 2 Jack Edward Birds on the Genes Reunited site, http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/
both born 1929, London, so looks like it could be your man, maybe.
One "owner " is called Stephen, so I guess it might be you & you may have explored this avenue already....
The site, if that is not you, and if you are not familiar with it, costs about £10 to join to access the information. You would then need to contact the "owners" of each Jack and compare notes to check it was the same person.
Hope this helps you .
Best wishes
Lesley

Hello & Welcome, Stephen!
You might be interested in checking out the Armed Forces postings on this site http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=32
There will be many here, who can give you a hand with military records.
The Royal Canadian Legion has a magazine which features a 'Lost Touch' column, so you might also want to check with the British Legion to see what similar service they offer.
Good luck in your search,
Frances

Hi Stephen
Bear in mind that his name was probably John rather than Jack. Although Jack is a very popular name now it used to be a pet name for John.
There are 21 entries for John E Bird in the current electoral roll - none for Jack E Bird. Two of the entries are in Scotland but neither are anywhere near Kilmarnock. You could try writing to all 21 of them.
You could also have a look in New Register House in Edinburgh to see if there any relevant BMD entries.

Hello Steven
I had an uncle Jack (not Bird) and his proper name was Ian I don't know why but I think Ian was also another name for John and Jack I remember looking in the phone book for his no and my mother telling me this.
Regarding Massey Ferguson I remember people from all over Ayrshire were employed there, places near Kilmarnock like Stewarton/ Kilmaurs/ Irvine etc would be worth a try if you think he settled around the Killy area
Regards Rita.
