john was born 30.01.1855 cambusnethan lanarkshire.
he was the son of andrew nisbet & jane sellat.
he appears on the 1871 census aged 15 staying at home.
whilst browsing on familysearch site i was surprised to find him in manhattan, new york, 1900 and married to an annie bird.
i would be grateful for any help in finding out what happened to him.
thanks

Hi Margmo
Is there any chance he may have married in Scotland before he went to Manhattan? Or was Annie from America?
Have you looked for him in the 1881 census? Ot the '91 - this might help you establish when he left Scotland.
Maybe also try the Ellis Island site to see if that was his "way in". www.ellisisland.org
As a matter of interest, how do you know it is the same John? Does his occupation match, or is Cambusnethan given as his birthplace?
Best wishes
Lesley

morning lesley
thanks for replying. i have looked at ellis island site and found several john nisbets but the ages don't match up.
on family search it only gave john's birth place as scotland but named his parents as andrew nisbet & jane sellet which is correct. it say he and annie bird married in manhattan 1900 making john 45 years old at the time.
i tried to log into my information on scotlandspeople but couldn't access as my computer told me i need to enable cookies! will have to wait on my son visiting to sort that out and then check the 1881/91 census records.
warmest regards
margaret

Hi Margaret
With your browser open, go to the Tools menu (I'm assuming you are using Internet Explorer, if not, ignore this! ) then Internet options. Click on the Privacy tab and pull the slider down a notch. (Mine is on "medium high" and everything seems to work OK.) Click OK. You may need to close your browser for the change in settings to take effect...then its back to SP....!
Best wishes

Hi Margaret
Glad you managed to get up and running again with SP. 'Fraid I can't help with the American records - with any luck someone who does know will be along shortly!
I had a look on the U.S. Social Security Death Index on the Family Search web site but there are no obvious candidates. They are all too young.
Best wishes

Hi Margaret
This one is still a mystery at the moment!
Now you'd think it would be a piece of cake to find John and Annie on the 1900 census. I mean they got married in January and the census was taken in June...how far could then go in 6 months??? Very odd thing is that I can't find any John Nisbet that could be your fellow on the census.....but odder still is a single Annie Bird servant in Manhattan age 39 but claiming to be from Pennsylvania. So maybe there are two Annie Bird's....or maybe the marriage didn't last....or maybe John died before June and she went back to her maiden name.....or maybe she just plain fibbed on the census form. I've also looked in 1910 and 1920 and so far have not found a single clue. I can't think of anything else clever to try....but will keep pondering it.....
Best wishes
Jean

Most likely this John is just a red herring.
From the online LDS 1880 census, but probably only a coincidence on the name and birthplace.
He too was in Pennsylvania, but he's as married....

thank you everyone for all you'r help in tracing john.
the canadian connection jogged my memory. john was the brother of my grandfather henry and when i was a child i remember seeing letters lying in a drawer with a canadian postmark. i'm sure they must have come from john or one of his decendants. i cant wait to follow up on this lead.
many many thanks
margaret
