birth and death.....

Post by Elizabeth » Mon Jul 03, 2006 1:04 pm

I'm looking for any information on James Farquarson Cordiner, born around 1827. he was married to Margaret Jackson on 14-6-1849 at St Cuthberts, Edinburgh. I can't find any information of where he was born or where he died. It's a complete mystery.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Elizabeth
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D
Have you checked on Scotlands People? Putting in a straight search for James Cordiner b. 5yrs either side of 1827 produces two matches, narrowing the search to 1yr either side produces one possible death, not in Midlothian though, both in Aberdeen area it seems, but maybe you have checked these already? What was his occupation?

Have you found them in the 1851 census? (if he survived 2 years of mariage! ) That should perhaps give you some clues as to where he was born. Maybe try the '41 on freecen first to see if you can find him?

A quick look at IGI suggests Ireland & Aberdeen are strong contenders for place of birth!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Elizabeth,

The online IGI shows three children to this couple, implying that the parents were around until at least then.

JANET CATHERINE CORDINER - Birth: 07 APR 1858 Milton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
MARGARET CORDINER - Birth: 12 JUL 1860 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian
CHARLES CORDINER - Birth: 06 JUL 1864 Leith, Midlothian

I could find no sign of any of them in the 1881 census (lowland Scotland counties).

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Elizabeth

Have you found them on the 1851 census ? that should give you an idea of birth place. Also doing a death search for Margaret Cordiner on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk other names Jackson brings back 1 result which if its her tell you if he is still alive or not
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Hi again Elizabeth,

It may well be worth a look at the 1861 census, probably in the Edinburgh area going by the birthplaces of the children.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Lesley
No, I haven't checked on Scottish People yet, but it's got to be worth a try.
Unfortunately, I don't know what his occupation was.
I appreciate your help.

Hi again Lesley,

Hi Andrew,
There was also another son, Arthur. He was born around 1851 and like his father gave his birth place as Edinburgh. When Arthur got married in 1879 he gave the information that both his parents were deceased and his brother William was a witness to this. All the more interesting because it was Arthur who registered his mothers' death 11 years later and she'd been staying with him and his wife prior to her death!!! Williams own marriage was 2 months after Arthurs and there's no hint of either parent being dead at that time.
All that info came from my cousin who is also researching or Family Tree.
In her search she failed to track either Margaret Jackson/Cordiner, or James Farquarson Cordiner , in any of the censuses, and she searched the whole of Scotland.
Definately a mystery here.
All the best

Hi Tracey,
Neither James Farquarson Cordiner or his wife Margaret Jackson are in any of the censuses. It makes you wonder how they avoided them!!!
But I will do as you suggest and look on Scotlands People for a death search on Margaret Jackson/Cordiner.
Cheers

Margaret CORDINER MS JACKSON didn't die until well after 1879, and is shown as "married to James CORDINER, Mason", implying that James was still alive, but whether to believe that or not, given the mis-information in 1879 :?:

Note also that Margaret didn't die at the address of Arthur and family.

James is straighforward to find in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses, although, in 1851 he's with his father and mother, even although he's shown as "Mar".

Margaret, plus 1 year old son John is elsewhere in Edinburgh, maybe because of her employment?

In 1861 you need to search on the basis of CORD*NER to find him and family, - As well as 3 children, his widowed mother is now in the household.

There are post 1854 death register entries for both the father and mother of James.
