I am looking for "any" help/information on Janet Agnes Beattie dob c:-1888.
The only information that I have is that her parents were
Ebenezer Beattie & Sarah Crosbie Johns(t)on & was possibly born in Dumfries.
I have been able to find a brother to her,but cannot find her anywhere.
I would welcome any info on or about her at all.
Janet Agnes Beattie.....

Hi Baldy
Not sure what you have tried or where you have looked so far?
Have you been unable to find her birth on Scotlands People?
There is a Janet A* Beattie born in Dumfries in 1889 on SP - have you checked this one? - don't think her second name is Agnes, but there are 6 other Janet Beatties born between 1887-90 to consider, but you may have checked these.
What about the 1891 census?
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley.
Thanks for the reply.
No I have not checked SP,the information that I posted is /was all that I was given.
I have looked on LDS although the years do not go that far.
I did have someone in Scotland do a check for me & they found the brother but could see or find Janet.
They also found a James Johnson Beattie and according to them he was a son, but,on mail received today it shows that he was a grand son ??
I am now at a loss to he was a grandson to.
Regards

Hi baldy
You really must stop using other peoples research
! Seriously....there is no trick to finding your Janet Agnes Beattie other than you need to search in the right place. The easiest way to know this (or at least have a very good clue) and you know the parents names (which you do!) then locate the family on the next available census after you think the birth has occurred. THis doesn't always work as sometimes the child has died between the birth and the census year but in your case she hasn't! With a father's name of Ebenezer you can do a very wide search....I opted for the whole country and used wildcards on Beattie and still only had to spend one credit for a whole page of possibles.....which really then could be narrowed down to 3 realistic possibles. The census tells you the place of birth of each individual. Armed with this new knowledge you can then search for the birth of Janet. Since your person in Scotland could not find the birth for you then you have to assume several things......
1. Searching on Wrong spelling
2. Searching in Wrong location
3. Birth never recorded
in your case it looks like it was number 2.
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Baldy
Jean has it to rights
This a neat situation in several senses.
If you search on exactly Janet Agnes BEATTIE for 1888+/- 1 year you will find just one hit, but not in Dumfries town, or the county of Dumfries, but just across the county boundary from Dumfries registration district, in the county of Kirkcudbright.
Jean's advice about the censuses is good as well.
The situation is complicated by the fact that there are several people by the name of Ebenezer BEATTIE in the area, - Andy's 1881 census entry is another one
This is the relevant 1881 entry...

Janet Agnes survived to marry, but you'll need to search on the basis of J A BEATTIE to locate the entry, - there's 25 for the whole of Scotland in the period 1855 to 1930, and the matching record should be obvious; or you could take a flyer on her having married in her home parish and limit the search to that county, in which case you'll only find 2 hits, but they are both for the same marriage.

Christening:

Death:

Mother: Janet Callendar
Sarah's parents seem to have married in Roxburgh but look at the dates of birth for the children:
1. JANET JOHNSTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 26 APR 1855 Selkirk, Selkirk, Scotland
2. MARGARET JOHNSTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 29 MAR 1857 Selkirk, Selkirk, Scotland
3. SARAH CROSBIE JOHNSTON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 31 OCT 1857 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
Seven months ... I have my doubts.

Hi Joette,
Fine for nowadays but in 1857 without incubators etc. PRETTY IMPRESSIVE.
Especially is you figure in the usual (then) "Confinement" for the mother after giving birth. Usually a month I believe!
