1851 & 1861 census.....

Post by Baldy » Wed Jul 12, 2006 10:44 am

I am need of some advice for these 2 census.

I have William Beattie & wife Janet Beattie on the 1851 census being aged 40,so that would make their births abt 1811.

In the 1861 census it gives their ages as 47 (census being 10 yrs apart ?)
so making their yrs of birth abt 1814.

Can anyone tell me which one would be correct ????????

TIA

Hi TIA

Quite possibly both are. The age thing is not uncommon.
Have you actually viewed these census ? as the place they are living may give you more clues providing they didnt venture far.

Where did you manage to download census images in Photoshop format? The online images at SP are in TIF format.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

A nice free little programme to view images from SP is Infanview downloaded from http://www.irfanview.com.

It allows you to convert to a variety of formats---- well worth a look

McLeod, Mackay, Nicholson, McNeil - Skye
James, McLeod, Sinclair, Smith - Renton
Davidson, Adie, Gibb - Aberdeen
Jolly, Wishart - Angus

Hi Baldy

What are the particular areas of the two images that are giving you problems?

Just incase anyone is wondering where the certificates are - or will be once they have been approved.

Hi David

The area is the ages of Thomas Beattie & Janet Beattie.
In the 1851 census it shows them as being aged 40.
The 1861 shows the as 47 ??
