Surname Easton in Black's 'The Surnames of Scotland'.....

Post by robineaston » Wed Jul 12, 2006 3:41 pm

Hi

Has anyone got Black's surname book? I don't where to find it here in Finland. I would be interested of what it says about the surname Easton and records of the surname it lists.

I'm trying to find out about earlier events of the families named Easton. If you have found an early record of the surname, please let me know.

I've just checked and it's in the catalogue at Glasgow University Library. If you can hold on a couple of days, I'll go in and have a look for you one night after work and see what it says about Easton. The on-line catalogue lists both books as in the library, so I'll see if I can get one out and have a shifty at it.

There appears to be two versions one from 1946 and revised in 1999. Let me know if you want me to nip in to the library.

That's very kind of you. I'd appreciate your look-up offer if it's not too big task for you.

No problem - it's nice to be able to help someone and repay some of the assistance I've had from others.

I'll try and do it this week - it's the Glasgow holiday weekend so should be quieter now that the students have all left. If I can get it out, I'll see what I can do about copying.

Haven't forgotten you! Am going to nip in to the library tonight when I finish work. Still says it's in stock, so should be able to find it. Hope it's "borrowable". If so will take it home tonight for you and have a look at what it says.

On the offchance that Liz was unsuccessful in borrowing Black's book, I have a copy of it and will gladly send details of the Easton entry.

Hi Robin,

I don't know whether this will be of much interest to you . . . . .

The first Easton (+ variants) in the British Vital Records is this one:

Margaret ESTON, christened on 31 Mar 1566 in Edinburgh to James Eston (no mother's name listed)

The first one spelt EASTON:

James Easton, christened on 7th December 1617 again in Edinburgh to Thomas Easton & Helene Moderell

Hi Annes

Of course you can type the Easton entry here if you want. I'm very interested of it.

And thanks for the Easton information from the 1500s. It seems that there were Eastons in Edinburgh already in the mid-1500s.

Robin

Sorry for delay - the book has been mis-shelved. I've had a message today to say they've got it now, so will check it tomorrow if I can. I see that Anne has managed to help you in the meantime, but I'll still have a look anyway.
