Death information Canada, Is there .....

Post by Maud Jarvis » Fri Jul 14, 2006 10:53 am

On browing through some of the posts relating to information which can be found in Canada, (I`m a nosey parker!)

I noticed on one of the replies (given by BarbR, based in Canada)
details were given about a persons death (from the 1871 census)

there was also a mailing list number, but it was for 1871 census.
I wondered if there is any similar mailing lists, where I could hopefully obtain information about an ancestor, who died later than 1871, I know her date of death (1950) and have a photo of her gravestone, but I would love to find out further information, such as, who the informant was, and the cause of death, would that be possible??

The provincial and territorial governments, not the federal government are responsible for the births, deaths and marriages. Historical records are available, but without knowing which province, you'd have a large task trying to find your information.

These sites that may assist you, in locating a source.

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/genealo ... 900-e.html

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivi ... dex-e.html

http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

Although you may find a source among the above, there will most likely be a fee involved for a copy of a certificate.

If you'd like to PM the particulars of your search, I may be able to assist in narrowing down the most likely source. Although I must warn that a bad shoulder and imminent holidys, will likely mean a pretty slow response.

Maud,

The Ontario Genealogical Society have the ONTARIO 1871 census on the Collections Canada site, but it is only head of household..the mailing list was created because there are some people who have access to the whole census and if you find the reference to the head of household they can tell you who else was present at census time. Some of them are very helpful and are able to locate other pertinant info too :D

It is much more difficult with more recent deaths in some provinces due to privacy concerns here. You may find details in a newspaper article - as I did with the Toronto Star pages of the Past site. You can search 1945 for free but there is a charge for anything else, my man died on Dec 30 1945 and I found the notice in Dec 31 1945 :!:

If you can give us some more info on the province you are searching it may narrow things down abit and be easier to know if we can be of help.

kind regards
Barbara

Death certificate Ontario

Thank you for the information re obtaining a death cert.

I would certainly not mind having to pay a fee, I would jusat like to obtain the certificate in the hope that more infoirmation could be obtained about my gt aunt Laura. particularly as to who the informant may have been, in the hope that the person may have been a relative.

Would I have to contact one of the sites mentioned in your reply for this purpose? if so, which one would it be.

The only real information I have is that Laura died in 1950, and her next of kin was given as her niece, Mary Gartland. I do not know where she died, whether at home or in a hospital, but she was living in Hamilton, Ontario. Would that be sufficient information for the purpose?

Death certificate Ontario

Thank you also Barbara,
The only details I have are those already quoted , my gt aunt Laura Yokker (nee Gagan) was living in Hamilton Ontario, where she died.
I have just discovered that she died in Mount Hamilton Hospital, where she died on May 3rd 1950

She was born in 1876 in Stafford England. and married Lawrence Yokker in 1911 in Hamilton.
Her last known address was King Street East, Hamilton

Would these details be sufficient to obtain a registration or death certificate?
If so, from where could I apply for it. Thank you
