Death certificate of Grace Walker (wife of Abraham Walker, St Leonard's Strret, Lanark shows parents as:-
John Bailey (game keeper - deceased) & Grace Mathison?
I have been unable to trace anything about family on Scotlands People or IGI.
Can anyone help?

Hi Awgie
If you have the death entry - can you tell us what year it was and where the death occurred please? And her age at death. This will help us find the family.
Have you looked for the family in a census to see if there are any brothers or sisters for Grace? Sometimes checking the deaths of a couple of siblings can confirm (or otherwise!) the parents' names.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley
The death occurred at St Leonard's Street, Lanark, Lanarkshire on 24 July 1881 (age 63).
I have looked for siblings but without success. The problem probably lies in the many different spellings of the names concerned.
Census records have not helped as Grace (Grizel) married Abraham Walker in 1846 & the only entries for a Grace Bail(l)ie in Lanark for 1841 that I have been able to find are:-
Westport
John Smith 25 Writer
Agnes Smith 25
Isabella 3
Euphemia 2
Andrew 2mths
Grace Bailie 15 Servant
High Street
William Baillie 84 Shoemaker
William Baillie 50 Cotton Handloom Weaver
Grace Baillie 45

Hi Awgie
So I take it none of her siblings were helpful enough to have stayed with her and Abraham on subsequent census nights?
Looks like she may have been born around 1818 if her age at death is anything to go by, and there are a few Graces in 1841 who seem to be about the right age:
1841 BAILIE GRACE F 25 GLASGOW GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/01 081/01 003
1841 BAILLIE GRACE F 20 IRVINE /AYR 595/00 007/00 023 No Image
1841 BAILLIE GRIZEL F 20 LANARK /LANARK 648/00 017/00 005
You may have checked these already (the "no image" one will be a challenge!
) & she may of course be away from home already by that time as you suspected.
The '51 should tell you where she was born, but you may have this already. That should help narrow down your options a bit. Just in case you have not found her, the surname Walker is not easy, but Abraham seems to make life a lot easier by the looks of things on a preliminary search - there are only 1 or 2 of them. One aged 29 in 1851 which seems a little younger than Grace, but might be the right guy.Not checked them though, so can't guarantee they are the correct records.
Best wishes

Thanks Lesley
The 1851 Census shows Grace as being born in Lanark, Lanarkshire & Abraham Walker is no problem as I have been able to trace the family back through his Father William & Grandfather Abraham in the Lanark OPR.
I shall try the entry for Grizel Baillie in the Lanark 1841 Census & see if I get any further.

Well done Lesley!
Grizel Baillie is living with her Mother Grizel Mathison(?) at Hyndford Bridge.
Since her mother is using her maiden name, I take she is a widow although I've found in the past that sometines a maiden name is used if the couple are separated.
I'm still having problems reading the mother's surname but will use wildcards at Scotlands People & see if I'm lucky enough to find a death certificate for her.
Thanks

Women often retain/retained their own surnames in Scotland - in itself that doesn't imply that she is widowed or separated. ...Just to add further complications!!Since her mother is using her maiden name, I take she is a widow although I've found in the past that sometines a maiden name is used if the couple are separated.
