Parents of William Hotson, born 1820 in Canonbie.....

Post by graylady » Thu Jul 27, 2006 4:40 pm

Have been trying to find the parents of William Hotson born 15 Jan 1820 in Canonbie, Scotland. Have no luck at all. He went to Canada around 1850. He married Anges Ashcroft 1855 in Port Hope Canada, they had 11 children. Then went to the United States in 1875, settled in Missouri , Kansas the to Oklahoma. Was in the land rush of 1893 in Oklahoma. He died in 1906 in Hayward Oklahoma. We have looked and looked for his parents with no luck. Any help would be welcomed.

Hi there and welcome. You'll find folk on this site very helpful, and no doubt you'll get many suggestions to help you with your search.

Have you tried alternative spellings? The ones that come to mind are Howatson, Hodgson and Hodson. When you remember that the spoken word acn (Deliberate typo there :?: - not) be well multilated by a good thick accent, errors creep in. Also it wasn't unusual for people back then not be literate, or even if they were literate, they were not too concerned with spellings and identity the way we have to be today.

Cheers.

Hi Fran,

I know the following has the wrong birthdate, but the surname (however it's spelt) is unusual enough to warrant consideration that it might be a related family, especially as Keir was or still is a village which, like Canonbie, is also in Dumfries. Also, the dates for the children are for christening and that usually took place soon after the birth, so this William could easily have been born in January.

Husband - David Hoatson Birth: About 1785 Of, Keir, Dumfries, Scotland

Wife - Margaret Smith Birth: About 1789 Of, Keir, Dumfries, Scotland

Children

1. Margaret Hoatson Christening: 19 MAR 1811 Keir, Dumfries, Scotland

2. John Smith Hoatson Christening: 18 FEB 1813 Keir, Dumfries, Scotland

3. William Hoatson Christening: 11 FEB 1815 Keir, Dumfries, Scotland

4. Michael Hoatson Christening: 17 MAY 1819 Keir, Dumfries, Scotland

Hello Fran,

Have you looked at the William Hotson age 20 living at Canonbie in 1841 on SP to see if he is living with his parents?

This has been discussed before on TS but I think in some parts of Dumfries only girls were indexed in the IGI. Could be this area is one of them as a look at the Hugh Wallis site shows only female births.

Hope this helps,
Annette M

Liz,
Fairly well sure the spelling is right on the name.
Have a letter written by an A.E. Hotson stating that he was the brother of William.
Also that the great-grandmother was Grizel Nichol who married Alexander Hotson their son William went to England and died there in 1866. Another dead end.
Other sons went to Canada. But can't make the connection between this William and them.
Also they are cousins to the Beattie's. One of Williams sons is named William Beattie Hotson.
Alexander and Grizel's daughter married a William Beattie. The mystery thickens.
Still stumped, but not giving up.
