BOSTON, MA. STREETS .....

Post by Andy » Fri Jul 28, 2006 9:46 am

Still on the Hunt for my Boston Keogh/Kehoe/Cahoes.

Just came across the 1860 Boston Trade Directory listing my G - G Grandfather John Kehoe, Tailor, 28 Nashua Street. He died in March 1860 so it was a bit of a wasted entry!

At 30 Nashua St. is a Peter R. Kehoe a Tailor and at 31 Nashua St. James Kehoe a Labourer. I'd found them before on the 1860 census and I'm fairly sure they are all related but I don't have access to the records.

Anyway, my John Keogh's father was also John, a Tailor.

Can anyone tell me how close Nashua Street is/was to High Street, Albany Street, North Square, Richmond Place and Chambers Street in Boston?
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Hi Andy

From a search of a somewhat current Delorme mapping software program there are several choices on several of your street names which doesn't help! :( Only one North Square and I hazard a guess that hasn't moved and that is in the North End. Several names can be found in this general area but not all. I need to spend a bit more time plotting all the choices and will have to get back to this later this evening. If you need census help just yell as I can search all years but 1930. Found your Peter actually indexed in this case under KEAGH.

KEAGH, PETER R (1860 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , SUFFOLK, 3-WD BOSTON
Age: 49, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: IREL
Series: M653 Roll: 521 Page: 62

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks for that Jean. I've no longer got a subscription to Ancestry but it took ages to track down my family in 1860 after the father died.

I resorted to searching for ALL Hugh's born in Boston in 1859 and found the family under Caeoh (or something equally weird). The bonus was that two of Mary's sister's, Bridget and Katherine, were staying Boyle was misspelt too, Boles and Boyl.

Today I think I've found Kate, the sister's, marriage to Thomas Hayes and tracked them down on the 1880 census.

Mary Ann and her sisters parents were Hugh Boyle and Ann Unknown couldn't see them anywhere in 1850 but know that John Keogh (Kehoe) arrived in 1854.

If you have the time could you have a wee peek to see who was staying with Peter, I think the very next page has James.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy

My goodness what a difficult lot you have! I'm not certain I've even found the right James. There are two as KEHOE in 1860 but none just 1 or 2 pages over from Peter R. One James is age 31 is a Cooper and he's on page 208 (3rd Ward at least just like Peter) listed Married but in a household lineup of seemingly unrelated names. The other is a 30 year old on page 30 (so only 30 odd pages away from Peter) This is that family:

KEHOE, JAMES (1860 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , SUFFOLK, 3-WD BOSTON
Age: 30, Male, Race: WHITE, Born: IREL
Series: M653 Roll: 521 Page: 30

James age 30 b. Ireland Occ: Rail Road
Ann age 30 b. Ireland
John age 6 b. Mass.
James age 4 b. Mass.
Michael age 2 b. Mass.
Eddie age 1/12 b. Mass.

Peter's family in 1860:
Peter age 49 b. Ireland Occ: Tailor
Sarah age 45 b. Ireland
Anna age 18 b. Mass. Occ: Domestic
Thomas age 14 b. Mass.

Can't even find the Hugh that you referred to!!!! But I'm working with HeritageQuest indexes so a different beast from Ancestry.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Andy,

I just picked up a Boston Street map, so if you e-mail me your address, I'll mail it to you ASAP.

And if you find yourself needing a copy of a BMD record in the State of Massachusetss, just let me know.

Regards

Thanks for all the help.

BobG kindly found loads of info on my John and family a few years back. I knew from marriage and birth certs that John lived on Nashua Street and later found Peter and James at sequential house numbers on Nashua.

Kehoe isn't that common a name (except in the Molly Maguires) so it seems likely that the three Keoghs at 28, 30 and 31 Nashua Street are related in some way.

Hugh Kahoe was 9.12 in 1860 if memory serves the family had moved from Nashua by the time of the census.

I'll try The Boston Library for marriages of Peter and James.

Thanks again

Hi Andy,

All Birth, Marriage and Death records between 1841-1915 are held at the Massachusetts State Archives. http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcidx.htm

I'll be visiting the archives in the next month and could do a look up for Peter & James's marriage records? I tend to doubt if you'll find them at the Boston Library?

Regards
Marilyn
