I have been trying to find any info of a Hugh Thomson c1817 and Margaret Wallace c1818, according to the IGI they could have married Galston or Kilmarnock 1836, there seems to be two, not sure what one to go for on SP
Hugh was a wood sawyer
I did a search for Margaret's death on SP, there is one for 1871 Muirkirk, but its not her, they both are alive when their son John was married in 1862 Cambusnethan

Re: Thomson/Wallace
The answer is "could be both of them". In most cases, what you see in the OPRs, and subsequently indexed in the IGI is a record of the calling of the banns rather than the marriage itself. In the case where the bride and groom were from different parishes, then the banns were called in both churches, hence two entries on the IGI.thomsos wrote:I have been trying to find any info of a Hugh Thomson c1817 and Margaret Wallace c1818, according to the IGI they could have married Galston or Kilmarnock 1836, there seems to be two, not sure what one to go for on SP
However, in this case, if you look closer at the details on the online IGI, the Galston one is extracted from the records, and the Kilmarnock on is a submitted entry - not from the records. It could still be that one of them was from Kilmarnock, but until you can find any written record from there, I would stick with the one from the records in Galston.
Looking at the LDS submission, there are birth and death entries for Margaret Wallace. Born 1815, Riccarton Ayrshire. Died 08 April 1891 (no place listed). It may be worth looking further into these to see if you can verify them anywhere. Beware, it is not uncommon for LDS submitted births to be approximations calculated from information given in the censuses - and if you have dealt with many census records, you will know to be wary of the accuracy of the information, particularly the ages given.
All the best,

Re: Thomson/Wallace
Hi Thomsos,
They are quite possibly the same couple, with the Banns read out in their respective parishes.
(just noticed Andrew has given a much clearer explanation)
IF this is Hugh & Margaret in 1851 & 1861 (no more details), then they seem a wee bit older than you suspected....

Yes I think this could be my family, I sometimes find it a little difficult to be certain, but I viewed Margaret Wallace death 1891 on Sp, and yes I'm sure its her, don't know how I missed it, but I can't find her on the 1881 census, also I can't find Hugh's death, he died sometime between 1862-1891, as Margaret was a widow, help please
Thank-you
thomsos
ps, when do I stop being a novice and get the hang of this

ps, most of us never really stop being novices - we are always learning something new.

Re: Thomson/Wallace
Hi Thomsos,
Neither did i.
I just searched for a Margaret born 1815 +/- 5yrs in Riccarton.
There was no THOMSON, but there was a WALLACE - with the correct THOMSON children.
But if i'd not found a suitable Margaret, i'd have tried a different age, or just born Ayrshire, or whatever.
The LDS 1881 census CDs must be one of the best ever buys!

Have you looked at the Hugh Thomson who died in Riccarton in 1864?
Regards,
