Hi all,
one of my GLENDINNING ancestors was a farmer at Boytath. I suspect that it is/was in Dumfries and Galloway in the Torthorwald area but have not been able to locate it.
I have Googled to no avail and have located other farms in the area associated with this family.
The only lead I have found is a reference to the "CARLISLEs of Boytath" nothing more,

There's a Boyach in Whithorn in Wigtonshire but that's some distance from Torthorwald.
But there's a Brytath in Torthorwald !!, which I'd put some money on is the place in question, - info via the ScotsOrigins place name search facility, which uses all the place names in Scotland in the 1881 census.

Hi Bairdie,
Boytath can be found on the 1890s parish map in Torthorwald Parish. See the following map.
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html
Select Sheet 10 - Dumfries.
Torthorwald is the pink coloured parish in the south-west corner of that map. Click a few times on the parish to zoom in on it. As the zoom in gets closer, click in on the north-west corner of the parish. You should now find Boytath.
To see it on a current map, go to:
http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/
Click on I want to get a map now.
Enter NY022800 in the search box, then Go.
Using the controls to the left, you can zoom out to see the location relative to Torthorwald or Dumfries.
The Brytath that David mentioned above seems to be the right place. When you look at the 1881 cansus, the neighbouring places are as seen on the maps of that area. However, if you were hoping to find your folks there in 1881, you will be disappointed - see below.

thanks for the info, it sounds as though Brytath is an 1881 misspelt version of Boytath,
Many thanks

thanks for the reply and the map references I have now pinpointed Boytath and it is where I would expect it to be. As for the 1881 census they would not be there then as William Glendinning died in 1828.
Two weeks ago I was up in D&G wandering around Hemplands, Redhills farms and Torthorwald and Tinwald but could not find Boytath
Again Thank you
