Musks.....
I am one of the worst family history researchers ever, as I haven't actually begun looking for this family, but I was wondering if anyone had come across the name in their own research.
I know there are Musks in Suffolk, but it's not them I'm interested it. My Musks came from Canada, though were originally from Scotland. I'm not sure if they were called Musk when they originally went over, but by the time they came back in the early 20th century, there the name was.
I'm going to ask questions of the family, but was curious as to how common the name is...
Thanking you!

If you click on scotlandspeople at the top of the page you can use the free surname search on the log-on page.
Key in the name and the span of dates and you will discover just how many or how few MUSKs were recorded in Scotland in that time span.
Statistics can be useful sometimes.
It would almost be worth downloading all their certificates just to see the relationships.

Hi there and welcome to TS.
I've never heard the name Musk before - but confess that when I read your post I did a search on google. There are a lot of sites containing the word musk, but you can sift out the words you definitely don't want and you'll find several referring to people of the name Musk.
There is one site for Musk's sausages from Newmarket! However reading down the list of sites - the name is very uncommon.
I wish you well in your search.
PS - I see Russell has just replied to you and the suggestion to try SP is a good one.

Well, they are even few and far between on SP, and that was for the full date spread
As Russell suggested, with that few, downloading the images could be helpful.

Is this one likely to be one of yours? It was the only Musk that came up for Scotland on Familysearch, but SP obviously has more.

Thank you for all your replies!
I think my first step is to ask some questions about actual names, dates, places and what-have-you.
As far as I know at the moment, the family went to Canada from somewhere in the North East (they say Monymusk, hence once explanation for Musk), but I will find out more!

Well, thanks to my aunt, who very kindly looked up some information for me after seeing my posts on Talking Scot, I have found the family on both the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census records!
Mark Musk (b. 1868)
Rose Musk (m.s. Hempstead) (b. c.1878-1883) - different birth dates on the two censuses!
Fred Musk (b. 1899) (my husband's grandfather)
Charles Musk (b. 1901)
Gladys Musk (b. 1903)
My husband reliably informs me that Charles changed his name to Carey Croft, for some unknown reason, but that he has no knowledge of Gladys. He has also just said that Charles/Carey is still alive, until I mentioned that he'd be 105 years old...but he doesn't remember him dying!

In that case, here is Mark and Rose's marriage record (what a name for a marriage place
)
Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1857-1922
Name:Mark Musk
Spouse Name:Rose Hempstead
Marriage Date:20 Oct 1898
Marriage Place:Rat Portage
Registration Number:36855
Archives of Ontario Microfilm:96
And birth records for the three children:
Frederick Mark, b. 27 July 1899 in Rainy River District, Ontario
Charles Edgar, b. 1 Sep 1901 in Rainy River District, Ontario
Gladys Rose, b. 7 Dec 1903 in Rainy River District, Ontario
In the 1901 census Rose says she was born in Ontario, and the database covers all the possible years, so I thought I'd try that too, but I don't think she is there. The only plausible birth record I can find is for Rosanna Jane Hempstock (this is not a transcription error, the original is quite clear). Besides the name, the other problem is she is supposed to have been born in June according to both censuses, yet the above birth record is for September
There is a Rose Heffron who is born the right day (June 21) according to the 1901 census. That is in 1882.
The only other June 21 Rose is Helen Rose Cannom in 1876
Maybe she changed her name too
The Ontario death record database only goes up to 1922, so none of the family is listed, but there is an Ethel Musk, who died of tuberculosis at age 23 in 1914 in Toronto. Do you know if/how she is related? She is married, but her husband's name is not given. The interesting thing is that her father's name is... James Carey-- aha! Could that have something to do with Charles' name change? The plot thickens...
Hope some of this is useful.
Cheers,
Sarah
