Stobcross St, Airdrie.....

Post by Caroline » Fri Aug 04, 2006 3:11 pm

I have a relative who's listed as being born in Stobcross St, Airdrie about 1818. However on searching all the map sites I can only find a Stobcross Street in Coatbridge - is this the same street and does anyone know what is there now?

Hi Caroline,

I recalled the name, so had a look on the map for Stobcross St. I don’t know if there was one in Airdrie, but as you’ve probably seen on the maps, it was around the Buchanan St. area and I believe when I went to school over there in the 60’s it was just regular housing of the day but seems to be an industrial estate these days…some kind of light industry by the looks of things when I was over in April. Coatbridge has changed so much over the years and not all for the better. I believe 1818 would have been around the beginning of the “industrial revolution". Have you had a look on here http://www.monklands.co.uk/coatbridge/ it will give you a little insight into the villages of Coatbridge and Airdrie, etc. at that time....I don't think there will be any mention of Stobcross St though.

Regards,
Anne H
