Hello All,
I am hoping that some kind soul can help me with this, I am coming to Scotland in 2007 and would like to visit my Grannie's grave but have no idea how to find her. Is there somwhere I can look up this sort of information? Her name was Elizabeth Stewart Miller and she died in Glasgow in June 1915.
Where would I find a grave.....

Hi Margaret
Glasgow is a big place with quite a few graveyards. You could probably rule out the old graveyards which are no longer used but the modern ones - some are quite extensive and you would need to go armed with a section as well as plot number.
Could you give us some information to narrow down the possibles and probables.
If you have her death certificate it will give you the parish/district where she was living.
In Scotland her maiden name would often be engraved on a memorial stone as well as her maried name.
If she died in an area where other family members had lived there may be a family lair with several other family members interred there.
If she died in hospital outwith her normal district the death certificate often has 'normally resident at' in the name column.
Religion used to matter more in Glasgow than in some other places and there were separate burial grounds for Catholics, Protestants and Jews or, at least separate sections within the graveyard.
If you don't find an address you could look at the Valuation Rolls on;
theglasgowstory.com I think they are for 1913-14.
Some of our Glasgow folk will be able to give you clear guidance.

I found the information about the whereabouts of my Glasgow grandparents graves at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow. From what I was told, most of the burial records are held by the Mitchell

Hello Russell and Catriona
thank you for your help re my Grannie's resting place, yes Catriona one of the things on my list while in Glasgow is a visit to the Mitchell for a couple of days of research. I will send a email to them and see what I can come up with, once again thank you for your help
Russell
Sorry our Millers and Forresters didnt match up, but thought worth the ask. Now a wee bit more about Grannie Miller she died on the 12 June 1915 at 26 Algie Street, Glasgow, which I am presuming must have been where they lived at the time, the certificate says in the Parish of Cathcart. Thanks for your help Russell

Hello Margaret
Algie Street is a very small street in what would be more likely called Langside these days. 2 minutes walk away is the Bon Secour hospital which has a Roman Catholic Chapel as part of it. the nearest Church ofscotland is at Shawlands Cross 10 minutes walk away.
I was not able to identify if there was a graveyard nearby but with the information you have Catriona's suggestion of the Mitchell should pay off.
Fingers crossed.

The burials for which I found information at the Mitchel were comparatively recent too, in 1922 and 1928.
Best wishes
