Parents.....

Post by Elizabeth » Sun Aug 06, 2006 4:58 am

Does anyone know how I can find the parents of John Mcmurray, born 18-9-1811? John was born in Gorbals, Glasgow and was married to Violet Patrick.

Regards

Elizabeth

You could try searching for his death registration. If it occurred after 1855 you should be able to obtain it, and it will hopefully include his parents' names. At Scotland's People website http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ there is one John McMurray born between 1806-1816 who died in Lanark after 1855.

Researching: Easton ( Renfrewshire, Dunbarton and Glasgow), Corr (Londonderry and Glasgow), Carson (Co. Down, Irvine, Ayrshire and Glasgow), Logan (Londonderry and Glasgow)

A further search shows that there are 3 Siblings to John
WILLIAM , SUSANNAH and JAMES.

Hi Nina,

At the moment I haven't enough credits for scotlandspeople, but when I do get the next lot, I will do as you suggest.

I seem to be spending at least 6£.00 per week on credits with scotlandspeople, and as you know, it soon mounts up. I try and pace myself!

Hi Maureen,

I found George Mcmurray and Martha Barbar on the IGI site and I think they must definately be the parents of John McMurray (born 1811 ).

Thankyou for your help.

I had a look on a few census resources I have and got the following which I think are John & Violet:

Ancestry 1841 shows the following (mispelled) couple:
Main Street No 31 Hamilton Build St Middle House, Govan 646 ED 3 page 9
John McKurray 35 H L W Cotton
Violet McKurray 30
Violet McKurray 11 Silk Fac Wor
James McKurray 9
Jane McKurray 7
Robert McKurray 5
John McKurray 2
David McKurray 8mo

Here are the same family in 1861:
646/1 ED 3 Page 11
John Murray 55 born Govan
Violet Murray 50 born Hamilton
Jane Murray 27 born Govan
John Murray 22 born Govan
David Murray 20 born Govan
Margaret Murray 17 born Govan

And Violet as a widow in 1881
Dwelling: 8 West Ibrox Terr Govan, Lanark, Scotland
GRO Ref Volume 646-1 EnumDist 27 Page 40
Peter DONALD M 49 M Dunoon, Argyll Head Confectioner Master Emp 1 Woman
Violet DONALD M 50 F Govan, Lanark Wife
Janet DONALD U 18 F Glasgow, Lanark Daur Dressmaker
Violet DONALD U 21 F Glasgow, Lanark Daur Confectioners Shopwoman
John DONALD U 15 M Glasgow, Lanark Son Store Boy In Engine Wks
Maggie DONALD 12 F Glasgow, Lanark Daur Scholar
Violet (Mrs) MURRAY M 70 F Hamilton, Lanark Mother In Law

Given the names of the children it is not very likely (though not impossible) that George and Martha are your parents. It looks more likely that Johns father was called James and Violets father Robert. His birth/christening may never have been recorded.

You should be able to locate the family easily in 1871 as Violet is not a common name. They also use the name Murray so would suggest searching for *Murray to cover both McMurray & Murray. That should then narrow Johns death down to a 10 year range between either 1861 and 1871 or 1871 and 1881.

If the age in the 1861 census is correct, then there is a John McMurray born 1805 to James McMurray & Elisabeth Millar who could be your John.

HTH

Tom

PS I've just realised Violet is not actually given as being a widow on the 1881 so it is possible that John was still alive.

Hi Elizabeth,
That's why i was asking about the children - because of what Tom found. :D
Though the 1841 Govan census index by the GWSFHS has the family as MURRAY,
but with the same forenames as Ancestry.

And in 1851 - 646 (625) Ed 1 p 36 (Govan)
John MURRAY 46
Violet 41
James 19
Jane 17
Robert 15
John 12
David 10
Margaret 7
Elizabeth 5

Hi Elizabeth,
After Tom mentioned that Violet was still as married in 1881, this might be hubby John?
Correct birthplace & occupation, and near enough right on age too.
And if your John, always the possibility of a Poor Relief application.
And again, if it is John then his DC would be 1881+
