Appin or Port Appin .....

Post by Clarebelle » Mon Aug 07, 2006 10:00 pm

I am a little confused :? My ancestors McColls came from Appin which area is Appin? Is it Appin Bute area? Can you help with a map of Appin. Appin is inland isn't it? Mary Stewart married Duncan McColl. I want to know what area to search when looking for cemetaries or BMD registers.

Appin and Port Appin are in Argyll & Bute. There is a small island next to them called Lismore. I'd suggest keeping that location in mind as well in your searches, as people who might have married or got buried in Appin could have lived on the island.

Used to be one of my favourite days out when I lived in Oban, also in Argyll. There was a great little craft shop in Port Appin.

There is a Lismore web site which shows exactly where it is. Port Appin / Appin are just to its right.

Believe me, if you do ever visit that area, you will fall totally in love!

Beautiful scenery, lovely people, and access to the Highlands (not that far away) and Oban is known as the "Gateway to the Isles" as the CalMac Ferries go to many of the islands.

Iona is a must, but it means a ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull then a coach across Mull to Fionnphort, then a VERY short ferry across to Iona. I'm not a religious person, but landing on that island was the most spiritual experience of my life. The cloisters in the Abbey are the very essence of peace.

Also from Fionnphort you can go to Staffa and see Fingal's Cave, the inspiration for Mendelssohn's Hebridean Overture. If your timing is right you can hear the waves booming into the back of the cave which Mendelssohn recreated in music.

Oh Gosh  there I go getting all wistful again  .

That's a good map, David.
On the bit of land just to the right of Castle Stalker they built a cafe and shop that looks down on the castle. Sat there many a time just enjoying the view.

Got piccies somewhere - must dig them out.
