Post by Denise Brennan » Sun Aug 13, 2006 11:33 pm

John Ogg died in Arbroath, Scotland on 12 Dec 1867. His wife was Ann Young. I am desperate to contact anyone who has more information about this family

    Hi Denise
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

Do you have a copy of John's death entry? - that should give his age and his parent's names, so something to work with.

Have you tried looking for the family in a census? The 1861 should give his place of birth, and it would be well worth checking the 1851 & 41 too. (there are 3 John Oggs in Arbroath in 1861 - any age) Again this would help you find out about his birth and that of his wife, Ann. Do you know when she died?

You can search for his death and download a copy of the original entry if you have not already done this at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Census information is also searcheable there.

A quick look on the IGI (www.familysearch.org) reveals what looks like a marriage & a son for this couple:

Marriage: 05 SEP 1807 Dundee, Angus, Scotland

    JOHN MARSHALL OGG
    Event(s):
    Birth: 18 MAY 1819
Christening: 19 MAY 1819 Forfar, Angus, Scotland

    Parents:
    Father: JOHN OGG
    Mother: ANNE YOUNG
...but you may know about him already.

Freecen (www.freecen.org.uk) gives this likely looking family in 1841, but in Dundee (about 10miles from Arbroath) :
    Piece: SCT1841/282 Place: Dundee-Angus Enumeration District: 29
Civil Parish: Dundee Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
    Folio: 29 Page: 18
    Address: Step Row
OGG John M 45 Weaver Angus
OGG Ann F 50 Outside Census County (1841)
OGG John M 20 Weaver Angus
OGG Ann F 15 Outside Census County (1841)

...which may, or may not be them.

If you need any help where to find things or where to go from here, just give us a yell!
    Best wishes
    Lesley

    Hello Denise

Sorry....I'm not researching the OGG family but might be able to assist anyway. Not sure if you searched SP for the death of Ann but you'll be pleasantly surprised to find that using the maiden name and married name search parameters will net you both mother and daughter as the only 2 results. So yes I'd say Lesley's FreeCen find appears to be your family.

    Best wishes
    Jean
